Instagram Round-Up

Hey Cats!

I’m back! It’s been about 3 months since I’ve blogged. What? I just got so busy with work and life that Sweet Cats! was pushed past the back burner and basically off the stove altogether. It made me sad, and I’ve been dying to get back to blogging, but I just haven’t had the time. Until now, when I got sicky and had to stay home for a few days! I’m not promising regular posts right now, but maybe a few!

It has been way longer than I thought since I last did an Instagram Round-Up…the last one was in July! Yikes! So some of these may be a little (okay a lot) out of season (looking at you, monogrammed bathing suit), but whatever. Just put it on your list for the summer, it’s never too early for that! Don’t forget to follow along on the Blogstagram (@sweetcatsblog) to see my most recent posts!

jcrew-skirt-outfit

I’m obsessed with this JCrew Factory skirt! It was great during the summer with my white swiss dot tank, and will be great in the fall with tights and riding boots! Here, I paired it with my JCrew Factory chambray, watch, Marley Lilly tassel bracelet (c/o), and a statement necklace (similar).  This is a great polished look for work or church!

earrings
Beautiful earrings for pierced ears. I hope you caught that reference to one of my favorite books as a child! I had been searching high and low for a tiny “K” earring for my third hole. I finally found one at Nordstrom, and it has become a permanent fixture on my earlobe. I wore my Kendra Scott Alexandra earrings in Chalcedony, and I thought it was a great pair!

monogram-swim

Okay, okay, I know it’s February. But this is one of my favorite Instas ever. I paired my Marley Lilly monogrammed bandeau top with some bright coral swim bottoms (similar), grabbed my shades, $5 infused water from Whole Foods (this was before I had really grasped the concept of budgeting), and a pool read, and headed to the pool for one of the two times I went this summer.

greased-lightining

Yaaaaas the Greased Lightening dress! I love this little frock so much that I gave it a name, as you do. They don’t have this print anymore, but they do have it in the blue marble print, which my sister has and I love! I also have it in pink, because it’s so comfy for work!

packing

I’m literally obsessed with my Vera Bradley duffel. It’s like a Mary Poppins bag, you can just keep stuffing things inside and it never seems to fill up. This particular trip was for my birthday (in August lolz), and I packed my trusty denim shorts from Old Navy and my favorite little bird dress from SheInside. Also, this fluffy pink bedding makes me feel like a princess, and that’s the best feeling ever.

lilly-dress

Holy Shift. This is my score from the Lilly After Party Sale, and I honestly didn’t get to wear it enough before fall rolled around. This dress is no longer available, but I’m loving this one! I like to go for a classic look with my Lilly, pairing it with nude heels, a string of pearls layered with my monogrammed necklace, and my scalloped monogrammed clutch, c/o Marley Lilly. So Southern I almost can’t even handle myself.

baublebar-jewels

I had my eye on both of these BaubleBar pieces for quite some time. I love love LOVE BaubleBar, but it’s honestly too expensive for me to buy on a regular basis. But! They have awesome sales! Pro Tip: sign up for their emails- then you’ll get all the info. They have at least one piece for under $30 (a lot of the time it’s even $10 or $15!) each week! I got an excellent deal on these EKG studs that I wear nearly every day and this #obsessed dainty bracelet. The bracelet isn’t available anymore, but they have plenty of other dainty options!

loft skirt This is my favorite fall outfit! It’s one of those that I have to limit myself on wearing, because I would wear it every day. This blanket skirt from Loft is a fun addition to my autumn wardrobe. I paired it with a long-sleeved solid black tee, tights, and riding boots. To add some sparkle, I wore my Kendra Scott Rayne necklace in Pyrite (color bar only) and this fierce Gilded Leo Cuff by Baublebar (another Buried Bauble steal).

This was a big one! Fingers crossed that I will stay more on top of Instagram round-ups in the future.

That’s all for meow!

In My Closet- Striped T-Shirt Dress

Hey Cats!

Happy Hump Day! I’m writing this while watching this week’s RHONY, where Heather loses her mind because she woke up with unattended strange guys in their vacation home thanks to Ramona and Luann’s antics. And I’m having mild PTSD because unfortunately, I was in Heather’s shoes more times than I wanted to be in college. But I digress.

As you may know, “In My Closet” is a series in which I highlight an article of clothing that I personally own that I feel is a staple in the wardrobe of a fashion-forward young woman. Today, I’ve chosen something that you have probably already seen on my Instagram, but I love it so much that I wanted to share it again!

instagram-oldnavy dress

This striped swing dress from Old Navy was a wonderful addition to my closet last spring! It’s so comfortable, versatile, and classic. It’s the easiest outfit ever, you just throw it on and go! The stripes are a basic print that look great alone, but can also be spruced up with fun accessories. I love wearing mine with a statement necklace and sandals, as pictured above, with a bright colored scarf and fun earrings, and I’m looking forward to trying it out with my brown booties and a chunky scarf in the fall! Also, the stretchy t-shirt material makes it easy to wear all day and not be annoyed or uncomfortable. When I bought this, I didn’t think it would end up being such a great investment (ps, it was under $20, so it was also a steal!), but I could wear it every day in a million different ways. Add a simple, striped dress to your single girl closet and see what you can do with it!

TJMaxx Tweak- Lilly Pulitzer Maxi

Hey Cats!

For some reason, I am exhausted this week! I’m not sure if it’s because I had a busy weekend, if my regular 6-hour sleep schedule isn’t going to cut it any more, or if it’s because I haven’t been going to the gym regularly anymore. But I should probably start going to the gym again, for a variety of reasons. I’ve been wanting to join a gym, but I can’t find one with an indoor track, and I’m just going to have to convince myself to start running on the treadmill, which could take some time. The treadmill is just so boring, though. I feel like you run forever, but you never get anywhere!  The rec center at school kind of became my second home, and I’m going to have a hard time finding a place that I love as much as I did. Nevertheless, I need to go somewhere, so I’m just going to have to suck it up and start paying for a membership. Ugh. But I digress.

For the longest time, I knew that I wanted to get a Lilly Pulitzer shift dress for graduation. I wanted something classic, Southern, and grown-up, and a Lilly shift had all of those qualities. In November when I started looking, I had my heart set on the Janice shift dress in Shorely Blue.

janice-shift

It was perfect, and I was so excited about it. But, it was definitely expensive, and I wasn’t doing a great job at saving my money. Around spring break, I realized that I probably wasn’t going to be able to afford it. While I was at home for spring break, I went shopping with my mom and sister for Easter dresses, and though I wasn’t happy about it, I started looking for graduation dresses, too. I couldn’t find anything I loved (for graduation…I found about 5 I wanted for Easter…I had two different looks I was going for, okay?) at the first few places we went, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. The next day, my mom and I went to TJMaxx to look for a new top to go under my suit, and I thought I would browse the dress section while I was there, just in case.

AND THAT’S WHEN I FOUND IT. I saw the recognizable, bright-colored, juice-stand print peeking out of the rack, and I literally ran to it. They had my size, but there was one problem…it was a maxi dress. My mom was like “I don’t think this is going to work,” but I dragged her into the dressing room anyways-you can’t get what you want if you don’t even try.

I tried it on, and just as I expected it was WAY too long for me. But it fit perfectly everywhere else, and it was beyond gorgeous. I loved it, my mom loved it, and I had to have it. I twirled around in it for a while, and then I had an epiphany. “What if I cut it off and make it a shift dress?”, I asked my mom. She thought it was a wonderful idea, and we spent the next fifteen minutes in the dressing room deciding where we could cut it off, if the alteration place could actually do it, what to do with all the extra fabric, and of course, what shoes I was going to wear. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. Not really, but graduation has come and gone and I’m still just really excited about it.

Here’s what the dress looked like when I bought it:

IMG_0430

Please disregard the HUGE MESS that is my closet at my parent’s house. I was going to take a better picture of it, but I forgot until I was at the alteration shop and the lady held her scissors up to it and said “there’s no going back now!”. So this is the best I’ve got. Anyways, don’t you love it? I will admit that it made me a little sad to cut off all that extra fabric, especially since it had that beautiful lace trim on it. But my mom and I salvaged the fabric and I’m thinking about making a skirt out of it! Also, since this was at TJMaxx, I’m pretty sure it’s out of season. I don’t recognize this print, but I still really love it!

And here’s what it looked like after alterations:

IMG_0431

I’m obsessed. Still. I will seriously wear this thing as long as it fits, because we all know that Lilly is timeless. I was so happy to find it, especially since my dreams of a Lilly dress were crushed by my financial irresponsibility. Speaking of, you’re probably wondering how much I paid to make my graduation dreams come true. The dress itself was $80, and alterations were $20, so $100 total. Still not cheap, but significantly less than buying my first choice! I’ve never been one to tweak clothes to my liking, because most of the time, alterations are kind of a hassle, and it seems easier to me to just find something else that fits how I want it to. But do you remember Monday’s talk about not settling? Yeah, this was about the time in my life that I decided not to settle for anything I didn’t really want, and I decided that yes, that even applied to my clothes. Also, I really like the idea that probably no one else has this exact dress. I’m definitely going to start searching for more bargain pieces that I can tweak to my tastes. This is a great way for those of us who are extremely picky to customize our wardrobes without spending a fortune!

Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

Happy Friday! This week has flown by, which I can’t decide if I love or hate. Also, the weather. Who can I talk to about the disparities in frozen road distribution across Texas? Because it seems like literally everyone had snow days except for College Station. I mean, it snowed at Baylor in Waco, which isn’t an hour and a half away, so basically three feet in weather distance. And in Tyler, my parents and sister either had early dismissal or just didn’t go to work Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. They would tell me that they were all sitting in the living room by the fire as I sat in my office trying to defrost my fingers after my trudge across campus. But I digress.

It’s been an eventful couple of weeks, so I’m sure I could do Friday’s Fifteen- but I’ll spare you. Here’s what I’ve been loving lately:

1. Meeting the Pioneer Woman

pioneer-woman

Something about senior year makes you want to do everything you’ve been meaning to do for the past four years, because “I’ll never get to do this again!”. For me, that was attending three sporting events in the span of five days. Shocking, I know. Actually, I have really enjoyed basketball since I was in high school, and Aggie basketball is 15x better. Anyways, I went to the game against LSU last Tuesday night with my friend Shelbie, and lo and behold, Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman was in attendance. She is my culinary hero, and I’ve always said that I would be open to living on a ranch only if I could be as fabulous as she is. We walked over to the section she was in and asked her to take a few pictures, and she was sweet enough to take one with each one of us! She told us that her daughter Alex had just been accepted to Texas A&M, and asked us why she should choose Aggieland. I think I said something really vague along the lines of “it’s the best!”, but what I really meant was, “This place means the world to me. Not only have I received the highest quality education, but I’ve made the best of friends. I’ve learned so much about my faith, myself, and other people. There’s a sense of friendship among literally everyone here that’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and I know that I’ll be a part of that even after I graduate. But most importantly, this place has given me the skills to become the type of person I always wanted to be, but never really had the confidence to be.” (#senioryearsap) But obviously, that would have been a little long-winded. So we snapped our photos, thanked Ree and told her that Alex would be making the best decision of her life by becoming an Aggie, and skipped back to our seats to witness a very exciting Aggie victory over those silly LSU kitties.

2. French Toast in a Mug

french-toast-mug

I don’t know what it is, but something about making food in a mug just gets me really excited. I think it’s because I feel like there aren’t as many things to clean up afterwards, but let’s be honest, I am a walking mess so “minimal cleanup” is kind of a pipe dream for me. I found this recipe for French Toast in a mug on Pretty Prudent, and it looks like a wonderful option for Saturday breakfast. Also how cute is that mug?

3. #LlamaDrama

llamas

Yesterday, the Internet completely lost its mind. First came the Great Llama Chase of 2015, and the “what color is this dress?” debacle (which I will not address-you people have too much time on your hands, go do some homework.). Most important, obviously, is the high-speed llama chase. This Buzzfeed article provides excellent footage of two llamas frolicking through the streets of Arizona. Bless them. Also those little suckers are FAST. Just look at ’em go.

4.The Skimm

the-skimm

As I may have shared before, I love to start my day with The Skimm! There is SO MUCH going on in the world, and I’m not just talking about llama chases and silly debates about color. The Skimm is a daily email that gives you a quick overview of important issues- ISIS, Israel, the Keystone XL Pipeline, and the like. It’s important to stay informed, so if you haven’t subscribed, do it right now!

5. Tildon Dress

tildon-dress

A few weeks ago, I went to Houston to visit my bestie Ashley, and I tried on this Tildon shift dress at Nordstrom. I couldn’t justify buying it, because I had just bought a similar dress that I hadn’t even worn yet. And then last week, I bought yet another similar dress that I have yet to wear. But I kind of can’t stop thinking about this dress- the cut is very flattering, and the colors are so much fun! I don’t really need it, so I’m going to try and control myself, but no promises. If anyone feels like talking me into buying it, be my guest.

That’s all for meow! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend- and stay warm!

Florals & Fur

Hey Cats!

I never know what to do with myself on winter break after Christmas is over. It’s always so busy the week of Christmas with shopping, cooking, wrapping presents, and visiting family that once December 26th rolls around, everything halts and I’m left with a shirt box full of candy and nothing but time. Lately, I’ve been running errands with my mom, blogging, not working out and then freaking out about it, and trying to talk myself into starting to apply for real jobs (it’s not working so help please, I’m almost an adult). Since I haven’t had this much time off since last winter break, I’ve been relishing the time I have to relax, but I’m starting to feel like a bum- yikes! Hopefully I can find something productive but still fun to do over the next few weeks!

Two of my favorite trends lately have been big florals and fur vests. Now, I know it’s usually frowned upon to combine multiple trends, but I really love how they look together!

photo 1 (2)

Dress- Forever 21, Fur Vest- Francesca’s, Booties-DSW, Earrings-Kendra Scott, Clutch- Marley Lillyc/o

I bought this dress for a date party a few weeks ago. I waited until the day of the party to go shopping, and was frantically running around the fabulous Post Oak Mall trying to find something that fit the “Florals & Flannels” theme and that would go with my cowboy boots, since it was two-stepping. Well, I found this, and I loved it so much that I honestly forgot about the cowboy boots and just bought it, and it happened to look really cute! Anyways, I couldn’t find it online, but I love this one, this one, and this one! I have been dying to wear it with my booties and tights, and then I got the idea to throw on one of the latest pieces that fuels my outerwear obsession, my fur vest, and I loved it! The fur makes it extra fancy, not to mention extra warm! This would be a great look for holiday parties, if those weren’t all over by now. Oops. But you could wear this on date night, or maybe even to a New Year’s party, if you’re not really into sequins (but I don’t know why you wouldn’t be)! Also, this dress has optimal twirl potential, so if you’re dancing, this is definitely the right choice.

I’m linking up with Lauren at Style Elixir today!

In My Closet-Casual Black Dress

Hey Cats!

Remember about a month ago when I said I was going to start a new series called “In My Closet”? Well, here’s the second post! Maybe I should call it an “occasional feature” rather than a series since I’m not too great about posting regularly! To refresh your memory, (or if you’re a new reader) each In My Closet post features an item of clothing I personally own that I feel is a staple in the wardrobe of a fashion-forward young woman. This time I’ve chosen to feature my newest (clothing) purchase, a casual black dress from BCBGeneration. I bought this last weekend when I went shopping with my mom. It was WAY on sale-regularly $88, I got it for $43! I wasn’t looking for a dress, but I picked it up because it looked cute and it was a good deal. I put it on and my mom told me that if I only bought one thing that day (I didn’t), it should be this dress.

photo (26)

It fits me perfectly and is quite flattering! It’s very simple and sophisticated, and can be worn for a variety of occasions. I wore it to church on Sunday with black peep-toe Jessica Simpson heels and my favorite Kendra Scott turquoise Elle earrings. It can be dressed up with heels and jewelry, or dressed down with nice sandals and studs. You could even add a cardigan when it gets cooler! Since this dress was on sale, I don’t think it’s available online anymore, but here are some similar options!

1)Love these lace sleeves

2)This pleated skirt is darling!

3)This trendy peplum is also a great choice!

If you don’t have a casual black dress in your wardrobe, you should definitely invest in one. It will become a go-to piece that you won’t regret purchasing!

What’s your favorite way to wear a black dress?

Outfit of the Day- Sunday Steal

Hey Cats!

I usually try to post at least once a week if not more, but this past week and a half has been very busy! I finally got a job, so I’ve been working every day, and when I get home all I really want to do is lay down and play Candy Crush. I love having a job, but it’s hard getting used to working all the time! Also, last weekend I went to visit my old roommate/one of my good friends Ashley in College Station. It was great to see her and wonderful to be back, even if it was just for a little while! While I was there, I did a little shopping at a few of my favorite College Station-only spots, and I found this gorgeous dress on sale at Northgate Vintage for only $14.50! Talk about a steal. As you may know from one of my previous posts, I am obsessed with Northgate Vintage. It’s a great place to find pieces for your Single Girl Closet on your College Girl Budget.
photo (14)

I love the colors of this dress, and the floral/damask print! I also love the exposed, contrasting zipper. It’s very different from any of my other dresses, which is great because I feel like they’re all the same! I was really excited to wear this to church today, and here’s what I paired it with:

photo (16)

I chose my Steve Madden nude heels because I thought they would look great with the blush background of the dress, and my Kendra Scott Elle earrings in turquoise! I didn’t add a lot of jewelry because of the intricate pattern on the dress. While I am absolutely obsessed with this outfit, I want to be able to wear this dress in different ways! Any suggestions?

Summer Style Watch

Hey Cats!

First of all, how do you like the new blog? It’s very chic and sleek, which is what I was wanting for the blog, so I love it!

Also, since I’m home for the summer, I have plenty of time to craft, cook, and blog! I have so many crafts I plan on making for my new house next year, and I’m excited to share them with you. If I end up actually doing them.

But for now, I’m going to share my picks for my favorite fashion trends this summer! Summer has always been my favorite season: swimming, sunshine, no school, and the freedom to dress however you want. Now that I’m in college, I can wear whatever I want all the time, but before I couldn’t wait to be free from school dress code and wear shorts and tank tops all the time! I’ve noticed that my style becomes more relaxed and bohemian during the summer. Normally, I steer clear of anything that could be deemed “bohemian” due to my mostly preppy and classic wardrobe, but there’s something about the natural, messy style that I can’t stay away from while frolicking in the sun from May-August. It’s also fun to mix more relaxed pieces with structured pieces to create a unique look. But more on that later!

The first thing I’m loving this summer is mix-and-match swimsuits. I am fully aware that this trend has been around for a while, but I have just now hopped on the train! I decided to go for solid colors, that way I can wear them together and mix them with the patterned pieces I already have. The possibilities are endless! I bought these two at JCPenney’s the other day- each piece was just $5! Also, JCP has turned into a new favorite store- everything is so cute now, and very affordable!

image (6) photo (3)

Next on my list is the maxi dress. I love maxi dresses- they can be dressed up or down, and are perfect for when you don’t feel like wearing anything too constricting. I feel like you can put on a maxi dress and say, “Well I really don’t care what I’m wearing but I’m still looking fabulous.” I’ve had my two favorites forever, but they’re both so versatile! I have a solid black dress that I like to wear with colorful sandals, statement earrings, and an armful of gold bangles. The printed dress I wear with wedges and my cropped denim jacket.

image (7)

I’m also on the hunt for a maxi skirt that I can pair with tanks and my denim jacket for a different look! I tried wearing the printed dress as a skirt to church a couple of weeks ago. It was really cute, but it was quite the struggle to walk and do other regular, necessary activities, so I won’t be doing that again. Also, my denim jacket that I mentioned has become a new favorite in my wardrobe. Living in East Texas/College Station, sometimes it’s okay to be a little bit country. I like to pair this with sundresses and boots when I go dancing, or over maxi dresses for church, or with other outfits when it might get a little chilly at night! I like mine because it’s cropped, so it’s not too bulky, and it has a cute design on the back that adds a little interest!

image (8) image (9)

Another thing I’m loving this summer is eyelet everything. Shorts, dresses, tops, you name it! I love the feminine look, and it’s the perfect summer fabric! My favorite is white, just because it’s crisp and classic, but it’s good to have colorful options, too! I love this eyelet tie-front tank from Dillard’s. It would pair well with colorful shorts, or a pair of dark wash cropped jeans and wedges!

eyelet top

Every summer, I have to get a new pair of sunglasses. It seems there’s always a new shape that’s in, and I like to try them out! Also, I tend to lose or break sunglasses more than the average person. This year, I’m loving oversized circle frames. Ever since I spotted Kourtney Kardashian wearing these fab Prada frames on Kourtney & Kim Take Miami, I have been dying for them. Unfortunately, Prada is not within my college girl budget, so I’ll have to settle for the Target brand that’s not as fancy, but still the look I’m going for!

pradasunglasses

There are so many more trends I’m wanting to try for summer, but there isn’t enough time, and this post would be obnoxiously long! What are your favorite summer styles? I would love to hear from you!

Coming soon: crafts for all of those t-shirts you don’t wear anymore! Gather them up and get ready to give them a new job besides taking up space in your closet! Until next time!
