Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

I’m coming to you live from my home office! I technically have the day off, but I have to answer calls from home today. To be honest, I’m a little nervous, because I won’t have all my files or anything to help me. But I’m sure I’ll get through it! I was so excited to sleep later, and I went to bed around 11, which is pretty early for me. This short week has been wonderful, and I’m excited for the holiday weekend! But anyways, on to the good stuff. Here’s what I’ve been loving this week:

1. Golden

gold-paint

Considering yesterday’s post, you already know that I love gold spray paint. It’s a cheap, easy way to add a little glam to your home! This post from You Put It On has quite a few ideas to make your house a gold mine, from candles to magnets and things in-between! I definitely have a few extra projects in mind after reading this.

2. Tassels

bauble-bar-tassels

These Acid Tassel Drop earrings from Baublebar are to die for. I’ve been wanting some tassel earrings since last summer, but I haven’t worked up the bravery to buy any, simply because I’m not sure if I’ll actually wear them. However, this seems to be the summer of statement earrings, so it’s only a matter of time.

3. Brownies

BrownieFeature

These Slutty Brownies  from What’s Gaby Cooking (my latest food obsession) are calling my name. I am D Y I N G to make them, but obviously I can’t just make a pan of these for only me, because fat. The Bible study I’ve been going to is having a girl’s night, and I’m thinking about making them then. So stay tuned, because I will definitely be sharing them with you if I do.

4. A Cinderella Story

cinderella-story

I found this wonderful Buzzfeed quiz that tests your knowledge of A Cinderella Story, the ultimate 2000’s chick flick. I made a 100 (duh), and if you don’t, literally never talk to me again because we obviously have nothing in common.

5. Abby Lee Miller

anigif_enhanced-buzz-32052-1367531106-15

Walk into your 4th of July party like this, everyone will LOVE. IT. This is how to win friends and influence others. Trust.

Enjoy your weekend, trolls. Abby Lee and I sure will.

That’s all for meow!

Power Couples

Hey Cats!

There’s just something about winter that makes people want to announce that they’ve found themselves in a perfect match. Maybe it’s the dawn of a new year, maybe it’s because people get bored when they have time off, maybe it’s because they’re tired of people thinking that asking about their future direction in life is an appropriate smalltalk topic- who knows, really (definitely not me). All I know is that new and surprising couples are popping up all over the place, and I’m all about it. Here are a few new relationships that have caught my attention:

1. Lilly Pulitzer for Target:

lilly-pulitzer-for-target

This is like that time your friend that knows literally everyone on campus dated that guy that also knows literally everyone and they became The Favorite Couple in all circles. Both Lilly Pulitzer and Target are powerhouses in their own right, so put them together and people (read: college girls across America) are LOSING THEIR MINDS. The combination of country club chic with Target’s “Expect More. Pay Less” mantra seems a little counter-intuitive at first: how is this high-end brand with a very specific target audience going to fly at a major discount retailer? But it’s like the first time you dip your french fries in your milkshake- you’re a little skeptical, but crap, that’s good and you’re not really sure why. I’ve never super loved any of Target’s designer collaborations- the products always appear to be noticeably different than the original designs. Which could very well happen again with this Lilly Pulitzer partnership- but I’m holding out hope. Also, whoever negotiated this deal is my hero, and I hope you get a bonus or extra vacation time or something, because you’ve done a great job.

2. Kate Spade Saturday + West Elm

Approved

This is the couple that was set up through a mutual friend because they’re both “so chill”, and the girl is real cute, but also a little quirky and awkward so she has a hard time talking to boys, but somehow it worked this time. Kate Spade Saturday is one of my favorite brands because of their bright-colored patterns and unique pieces, and West Elm offers a wide variety of modern, quality pieces for the home, with a commitment to Fair Trade and socially-conscious business practices. Together, they bring us a fun collection of sleek and chic decor that would be perfect for your first apartment.  I like how both brands are clearly apparent in each piece- classic West Elm shapes with eye-catching Saturday prints. A few of my favorites? The Anders Chair, this wool rug, and this geometric garment rack.

3. Kate Spade Saturday + New Balance

ks-saturday-new-balance

This is like when your best friend starts dating someone and you just know they’re going to get married because it’s simply a perfect match. I saw this while scrolling through Instagram the other day, and basically lost my mind. Mostly because I just bought new tennis shoes to wear to class, or I totally would pre-order some ASAP. Kate Spade Saturday is really putting herself out there this year! The shoes have classic New Balance sneaker shape, with fun Saturday style. I love this couple because it gives you both a colorful, trendy look without sacrificing comfort and support that we’re all looking for in a sneaker. My favorite pair is definitely the Freestyle– how cute would these be strolling to class or in the gym? Okay, I’ll probably have a pair in the next couple of months.

What’s your favorite collaboration for Spring 2015? Let me know!

In Defense of the UGG Boot

Because we all have a pair, and we’re all desperately searching for justification to wear them.

Short-Ugg-Boots_Chestnut_5_big

I got my Ugg boots for Christmas my junior year of high school at the height of their popularity, circa 2009.  Not only did I think they were the cutest shoes ever, I was going on a class trip to Washington D.C. that spring, and obviously I needed sherpa-lined footwear because there would be snow, and I’m from Texas and literally have no idea how to handle that. So, on Christmas morning 2009, 17-year old Kristen became a basic white girl, and not much has changed since then.

I have many fond memories of wearing my Ugg boots, and I’m actually quite impressed that they’ve held up for six years, including three long, hard, College Station winters. Unfortunately, I have also committed quite a few crimes of fashion while wearing them. These include (but are not limited to): wearing my Juicy Couture tracksuit TUCKED INSIDE the boots (I’m so, so sorry about this one) on multiple occasions (one happened like, last year. It was finals and I needed Starbucks, and I didn’t think I would see anyone I knew- I was wrong), with a sweater dress, and my personal favorite, with my cheerleading uniform to basketball games in high school because I obviously could not be bothered to put my cheer shoes on at my own house.

So many people hate Ugg boots, and to be honest, I get it- to an extent. They are not that cute and they actually make your feet look like giant potatoes. They make many short girls like me look incredibly stubby, and don’t even get me started on the ones with colorful glitter. But…have you ever put them on? They’re like little cloud pockets for your feet. And they’re so warm. I have worn them in actual snow, across campus in “freezing” conditions, and to the dumpster in mid-October, and my feet have always been so cozy. They are so great for when you’re running late to class, anytime the temperature is below 40 degrees, when you feel like wearing pajamas all day (for we all know that Uggs are the pajamas of shoes), or for when lacing up tennis shoes sounds like the hardest task in the world and you cannot even.

Here’s the deal: I know that my Uggs make me have potato feet and stubb legs, and look like a “basic white girl” (but pretty much everything does these days). I am aware that I am one of the diminishing few that wear them to school/the grocery store/anywhere. But I love them. I love them because they’re warm. I love them because they’re easy. I love them because you hate them. But most of all, I love them because nothing says “I do literally whatever I want” more than a pair of Ugg boots in public.

Thoughts From my Closet Floor

Hey Cats!

*An intro: something different today- a creative narrative. Enjoy please.

It happened.I was so convinced it wasn’t going to, but it did. I even told people it wasn’t going to happen.

But I was wrong. 3:47 pm on Saturday afternoon, I found myself in panic mode about finals, and I ended up in tears in my closet.

Yes. In my closet. On the floor. After a few minutes had passed and I had exhausted all of my not-exactly-genuine-more-like-dramatic-effect tears, I paused to reflect.

“You’re being ridiculous. You need to pull it together, write your essay, and then start studying for everything else. You’ve done this a million times, you can do it. Be an adult. Besides, I look great and I better be going on multiple job interviews in the spring- don’t screw this up.” snapped my Banana Republic power suit from inside its garment bag home.

She’s right, and I know it.

“But wait, think about how much fun you’re going to have over Christmas break!” my fur vest piped in. “No business casual for an entire month!”

That sounds really wonderful…also most of my other friends have been done for weeks. Why am I still here? This is the cruelest of punishments. When I get home, I’m going to sleep, drink coffee, blog until I’m literally out of ideas, and do everything I want and nothing I don’t.

The activewear section interrupted my daydream of my copious amounts of free time: “Um, why are you wearing that Juicy Couture tracksuit, is it 2003? What about all of these leggings you buy on impulse?”

Okay, 1. those are exclusively for the gym/when I’m going to be around other people and 2. IT’S FINALS WEEK I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT BYE.

Speaking of the gym, I haven’t been today.

“Well you need to, we’re bored and tired of being in this box,” exclaimed my running shoes. Yeah, that makes two of us.

Okay, I’ll go to the gym. But I have to write at least one page first. Or maybe just a paragraph. Actually, I’ll just go over the chapters for that topic and think about it while I run.

Crap, it’s 4:03. I literally need to GET IT TOGETHER.

No gym until you actually do something productive, Kristen. Like write a blog post. Or eat dinner. Too bad you cleaned your room already or that would count.

4:05. Clock is ticking on your success at life/this semester. Actually, I have a really got shot at something above a 3.5 for the first time in a while. I should work on that.

“Good talk, guys,” I say to my garments. “And thanks for lighting a fire under my butt, Banana Republic. I can always count on you to make me be responsible”. (side eye to the tribal print mini skirt.)

Here’s hoping your finals week is coming along better than mine, and that if not you also have a nice closet to cry in.
