Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

Happy Friday! I have both today and Monday off from work, so I’m super excited about this extra-long weekend! I’m going to blog, catch up with friends, and cry because the stuff on my syllabus looks dreadful. I really like school, but I’m honestly ready to be #done. Pray for me, I will need it. This isn’t to say that I’m not a little excited about school…it will be nice to get back into a routine, since all I’ve done over the break is lounge around. But I’m not sure I’m ready for how busy I’m going to be! I digress.

Anyways, here’s what I’m loving this week:

1.

The-Schlep-Dree-LV-nyc-636x423

Man Repeller has done it again. Their article on The Schlep is basically my life. I know I don’t live in NYC, but if you’ve ever seen me frantically walking across campus with my backpack, tote bag, and excessive outerwear, you know that I schlep. Especially in the winter, because it’s hard to carry everything when my arms are extra puffy from my coat and I can’t really move my head very well because my scarf is suffocating me. For example: on Wednesday, it was 39 degrees and I had to walk across campus to get to work. Naturally, I wore fleece leggings under my dress pants that need to be re-hemmed, a sweater, my long (knee-length on regular people, longer on me) coat, and a chunky scarf, and was lugging my work tote and purse. I kept tripping over my pants, my tote kept slipping off my shoulder, and my hair was blowing everywhere. Halfway there, it hit me. “Oh God, I am the Schlepper from Man Repeller.” Raise your hand if you’re not surprised. Schlep on, my friends.

2.

hidden-message-necklace

How awesome is this Hidden Message Necklace from Beth Macri Designs? At first glance it looks like three mixed-metal bars, which is pretty cool on its own. But from a different angle it shows a three-letter/character message- like a secret that only you know. Except I would show everyone because 1. It’s cool and 2. Secrets are not my strong point. It would be cute to do your initials (you people know I love anything personalized), or the initials of you and your significant other. I think you can do more than three letters, so the possibilities are endless! Just make sure your secret doesn’t get out of control.

3.

olsen-twins

The secret is out. Have you ever wondered about the Olsen twin’s signature “too vogue for you” face? Well thanks to Buzzfeed, now literally everyone knows.  I’m not going to lie, I knew this in high school. All of my friends and I did, and we would take “prunes” pictures at every major event because why wouldn’t we? Anyways, I’m definitely bringing this back, because when you can’t be an Olsen twin, you should pretend you are anyways.

4.

carrot-fires

I made these carrot fries for dinner last night and they were quite delicious. I bought matchstick carrots to put in salads, but I remembered that I had pinned this recipe, so I decided to try it out. You should definitely cook them on a higher heat like she suggests at the end, because I didn’t and some of them didn’t cook all the way through. But if you’re looking for something different for dinner, this is a yummy and easy option!

5.

barbie-n-friendz

It’s Barbie again. This Buzzfeed article may be from 2013, but that’s irrelevant. It shows the 11 Hottest Runway Trends inspired by 90’s Barbies, and it made. my. day. You really can’t go wrong when you combine Barbie with anything in the real world, at least not in my book. Also I definitely had the doll in the green overalls pictured above- her name was Skipper and I remember I wanted her because I LOVED the overalls/crop top combo, and I thought it made her look like Britney Spears. And some things never change.

Have a great weekend!

That’s all for meow!

Trends I’m Loving- Personalized Jewelry

Hey Cats!

Happy Tuesday! I’m so ready for the weekend already (as usual), but this week I’m extra excited- my birthday is on Sunday! I’m so excited to go home and celebrate with my family, and come back and celebrate with my friends! Twenty-one has been fun, but I’m definitely ready to be feelin’ 22- more on that later!

I know that monograms and personalization aren’t really “new” trends in jewelry, but I feel like there are more ways than ever to show off your initials and more through your bling. Here are a few of my favorites:

saturday initial necklace

I love this simple initial necklace from Kate Spade Saturday. It would be a great everyday necklace, and would be a nice way to anchor a few layered necklaces.

benevolent jewels name

Next is this Engraved Bar Necklace from Benevolent Jewels. I love the idea of a name instead of a monogram- or even a Twitter handle for bloggers!

Image of Silver Initial Ring

Last are these initial rings, also from Benevolent Jewels. You can wear just one, or you can stack them for all of your initials! This is a cute way to add a small, personal touch to your outfit.

What do you think about personalized jewelry? Let me know!

Today, I’m linking up with Zelle from A Southern Style, Kristina from Medicine & Manicures, Katie from Champagne & Suitcases, and Amanda from As the Wine Cork Turns for #TrendingTuesday- head over and see what’s trendy this Tuesday!

Trends I’m Loving- Summer Statement Necklaces

Hey Cats!

As we’ve previously discussed, I can’t get enough jewelry. While I only have a couple, I am enamored by statement necklaces. The bold shapes and sparkly jewels are eye-catching and can really add a lot to a simple outfit. Lately, I’ve noticed more and more statement necklaces with bright colors and fun textures that are perfect for summer. Here are a few of my favorites!

baublebarnecklaceI’m loving this Crystal Cord Collar Necklace from BaubleBar. It’s such a whimsical mix of casual and glamorous with the cord and the crystals, and is perfect for the summer. The bright colors make a great statement and the cord adds a unique, non-traditional twist. This would be great paired with a black romper and wedges for a night out, or bright shorts and a chambray for daytime.

neonbenevolentjewels

Next is this Blooms By the Stream Necklace from Benevolent Jewels. I love the bright neons mixed with the clear crystals. Also, the shape of this necklace is unique in comparison to other statement necklaces. While the colors are bright and the detailing is intricate, this is still a simple shape and could be worn with a patterned top or dress and not look too busy! Benevolent Jewels has quite the array of statement necklaces (and many other fabulous pieces), so if you find something you like, enter the discount code “KCODE20” at checkout for 20% off your purchase!

saturday fringe necklace

This Silk Tassel Statement Necklace from Kate Spade Saturday is definitely different- and that’s why I love it! The texture of the tassels and leather give it a more bohemian vibe, which we all know I love during the summer. This would pair well with a simple white tee, or under the collar of a button-down.

What do you think about summer statement necklaces? Are there any that have caught your eye? Let me know!

Jewelry- My Essential 5

Hey Cats!

Happy Thursday! I’m so excited, because not only am I going home this weekend, but tonight I’m going to see the Backstreet Boys and Avril Lavigne! The summer after I graduated from high school, I went to see the Backstreet Boys when they toured with NKOTB with my friends Kinsey and Emma, and it was everything. I can’t wait to see my boys again- and Avril Lavigne is a special treat so I can relive my brief fifth-grade punk bad girl phase (don’t ask).

It’s no secret that I love my jewelry, and I love to mix it up every day depending on what I’m wearing. I shared my everyday jewelry a few months ago, but the other day I was thinking, “If I could only have five pieces of jewelry, what would they be?” If that ever happens I don’t know what I’ll do with myself, but it was definitely interesting to think about. It took me a while to come up with only five things I couldn’t part with- some were obvious, but some took a little more thought. Here’s what I came up with!

photo (77)

First are my pearls. Technically this is two pieces, but it’s my hypothetical situation so I get to make the rules. Pearl earrings and a necklace are typically thought of as a set, so it still counts as just one. I got my pearls the Christmas after I turned 18- it’s a tradition in my family. I love my pearls because they’re a classic, and a perfect, Southern addition to nearly any ensemble.

watch

Next is my Michael Kors watch. I wear this every day, whether I’m wearing a dress or just Nike shorts and a tee shirt. It’s a classic piece, and it’s a staple in my jewelry box- I couldn’t go without it!

cross necklace black

Next is my dainty, sideways cross necklace. I love this because it’s a great reminder of my faith, and also because it’s so dainty. It can stand alone or be layered- very versatile!

cat earrings

I also chose my favorite cat earrings. It’s no secret that I love kitties, and I actually have quite the collection of cat-themed jewelry. What I love about these studs is that they’re whimsical yet practical. They’re a fun shape, but a classic color with a little sparkle. I typically wear these when I’m wanting something simple.

photo (76)

Last, I chose my Aggie ring. Duh. It’s the most valuable piece of jewelry I own, mostly because it cost me 90 hours of studying, sweat, and tears. It represents one of my greatest accomplishments and it’s something I’m very proud of. I also think that it’s beautiful- shiny gold with intricate detailing and a diamond in the center. Out of all the jewelry I own, this is definitely my favorite.

What are your essential 5? Let me know!

Trends I’m Loving- Agate Anything

Hey Cats!

I have been noticing agate popping up in jewelry and home decor a lot lately. You might be wondering what agate is, as was I. According to Wikipedia (credible source, I know) agate is a “microcrystalline variety of silica, formed by siliceous deposits in volcanoes”. Basically, it’s a very pretty rock found in volcanoes that, when sliced, has bands of beautiful colors. I think it’s a good thing I took Horticulture instead of Geology. Anyways, it’s a gorgeous natural material that brings a lot of interest and unique flair to accessories for both your ensembles and your living space. Here are a few of my favorite agate items:

agate bangle

This agate bangle from Ellie’s Sparkles is a great way to wear the trend. I love the white and gray agate, it reminds me of sea shells- perfect for summer! This would be a great piece to anchor your stacked wrist.

agate necklace

I also love this Sliced Hot Pink Agate necklace from Etsy. It’s a simple pendant necklace, but the pop of hot pink would instantly spruce up any neutral outfit.

agate coasters

I’m dying to have these Agate Coasters from Kate Spade Saturday for my apartment. How cute would these be on a black or gold coffee table? (Not that I have either one of those…ours is powder blue, but we’re talking about the ideal decor situation.) This is a great, small way to incorporate the agate trend into your home.

agate bookends

These agate bookends from West Elm would add the perfect touch of interesting to your bookshelf. I personally like to have some odds and ends on my bookshelf, I feel like it makes it decorative in addition to functional. I love the creamy blue and white colors of these bookends- it’s a more earthy-looking take on the trend.

Also, fun fact, I just read the book in the middle of the picture, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman for my Health Communication class. Because you wanted to know. It was actually quite emotional, and presented the unique challenges that doctors and people of different cultures face in the American health care system. If you ever have some time on your hands, you should read it- it really challenged my perspectives on some things! But I digress.

How would you like to incorporate the agate trend into your wardrobe or home? Let me know in the comments!

Current Obsession: Kate Spade Saturday

Hey Cats!

Now, I know Kate Spade Saturday isn’t necessarily a new thing, but I’ve just recently become obsessed with it. I perused the site when it first opened, but everything seemed a little too casual for me. However, my sister told me to give her some gift ideas from the kate spade new york site last week, and I wandered over to Saturday, just to check it out again. I’m so glad I did- they have the cutest, well, everything! I’m in love with the products- they have a unique level of simplicity that’s really fun and versatile, I’m dying to have basically all of it.

saturday confetti necklace

I love this Confetti Necklace in Beetle Iridescent. This would be the perfect way to dress up a chambray or a solid tee! I also love it in gold as well.

rectangle bracelet

This simple Skinny Rectangle Bracelet is the perfect dainty piece to pile on to your stacked wrist, or to wear alone if you’re a one bracelet kind of girl. It comes in a variety of colors, but my favorite is the black because it goes with everything!

cube earrings

The instant I saw these Cube Earrings, I knew I had to have them, and once I come into some Christmas funds, they will be mine. In high school, I had the CUTEST clear cube earrings that I was obsessed with. I wore them every day, referred to them as my “Ice Cubes”, and received countless compliments on them. One day after cheer practice, I was looking for them in my monster-sized cheer bag, and only found one. I searched high and low, but alas, it was nowhere to be found. It was so sad. Like the time Regina told Gretchen that hoops were her thing.

Now, if I continued to show my favorites from every category, this would be the never-ending blog post, and no one wants that. So I’ll just leave the rest for you to check out yourself- handbags, clothing, housewares…there’s so many wonderful things!

One other awesome thing about Saturday is their points program. By signing up for their emails, you can earn points towards really awesome free items by adding them to your “Favorites”, sharing on social media, inviting friends to do the same, and by making a purchase. I love free stuff, so I’m all over that! Look for my Saturday’s Five Favorites on Twitter and Pinterest every day to see what else I love!

Everyday Jewelry for the Gaudy Girl

Hey Cats!

It’s no secret that I love jewelry. From necklaces, to earrings, to bracelets, baubles are the best, and the bigger the better in my book. However, since I’m usually wearing Norts and a tee now every day now that I’m at school, statement necklaces and dangly earrings look a little out of place. But I still like my outfit to have a bit of sparkle, so I’ve got a few staple pieces to wear everyday that draw attention, but not too much!

First, I start with a stacked wrist.

photo (47)

I start with one or two Lily and Laura bracelets, then add my cable bracelet from Katie’s, and anchor it with my Michael Kors watch. I feel like I can get away with this arrangement at school because the watch is practical, and the other pieces are fairly small and not too fussy, so it’s still cute, but fairly casual.

Next, I wear my James Avery rings that I’ve worn forever: one on each hand. However, soon I will replace the one on my right hand with my Aggie Ring! WHOOP!

cross necklace black

As far as necklaces, I usually wear my delicate, black sideways cross necklace. Although it’s very trendy, I like to wear it because it goes with everything, and because it’s a great reminder throughout the day!

photo (49)

For earrings, I tend to wear studs. My current favorites are these kitten earrings from Target, but I also wear my pearls, my Kendra Scott Morgan Studs, or any other shape and size of studs.

This might seem like a lot of jewelry for some, but for those of us who love our gems, it’s just enough! What is included in your everyday jewelry?

That’s all for meow!

Need It Now- My Current Obsessions

Hey Cats!

Recently, I’ve gained a new love for jewelry. In the past I found it difficult to find pieces that matched each outfit, but that was only because my collection was too small. So obviously I had to do something about that! Over the past year, my bauble stash has grown considerably (but not too much, I’m on a college girl budget) and I have enjoyed adding variety to my wardrobe with jewelry. I try not to get pieces that are too trendy so I can use them forever, but there are a few pieces that are so “right now” that I’m dying to try!

Above-The-Knuckle Rings

Image

I LOVE these. They’re so dainty and a little bit funky, and they remind me of Phoebe from friends. My friend Kinsey and I were shopping the other day and we found some and completely freaked out because we have been looking for them FOREVER. I didn’t get any, (I so should have) but she did and they’re so cutie! I think they look great with bright nails and a well-stacked wrist! I also love the look of having one on multiple fingers. The ones pictured above are from Children Of Flowers on Etsy. Etsy has a great selection with an excellent price range! I love the chevron, and I also love these simple bands from AlinMay, these with the gorgeous rhinestone detail from JackandHazelStore, and of course, these with the precious heart and triangle detail from Raw Earth Studio. There are so many more that I love, initials, crosses, and many other shapes! There’s something for everyone!

The Stacked Wrist

Image

This image from kate spade new york shows a few variations on the stacked wrist. I like the different materials and color combinations, I think it adds interest and personality to an outfit! I also love anchoring the look with a big watch, like this one from Michael Kors. Another great addition to the stacked wrist is a few of these beautiful beaded bracelets from Lily and Laura&lt. The best thing about a stacked wrist is that you can use what you have, and it never has to look the same!

Layered Necklaces

Image

I have one necklace that I typically wear every day, with a Texas A&M charm and my sorority letters, so I’m usually not into other necklaces, but the layered look is making me think again! I love the look of a few dainty chains of varying lengths with different charms or stones. I’m looking into buying a few to mix with a necklace I found in a vase of old jewelry from Goodwill I received at a white elephant party last Christmas. It has a small gold circle charm that says “LOVE” and it’s adorable. I plan on pairing it with a gold and turquoise cross necklace, like this one from addieladawn on Etsy, and an initial necklace, like this one from mctdesigns on Etsy.

All of these trends are definitely on my “to-buy” list for the summer! What are you loving right now?

That’s all for meow!

Shopping Spotlight: Northgate Vintage

Hey Cats!

As you know, there’s no place I’d rather be than College Station. While it is one of the best college towns in the south, (this is in Southern Living, not just my biased/correct opinion) it isn’t exactly the “Retail Capital of Texas”. There are some great little boutiques around town, but my personal favorite is Northgate Vintage. Right across from campus in College Station’s “bar district”, Northgate, this precious shop is tucked away between a pizza parlor and a Starbucks. In fact, if you were just strolling the sidewalks, you might walk right past it without even noticing. But don’t do that! Go up the (slightly terrifying) spiral staircase to a wonderful, uniquely-decorated, space and you will find yourself in absolute vintage heaven. It’s a small store, but it is filled with beautiful pieces that your closet is begging to be filled with. Begging. In the fall, they have perfect maroon pieces for gameday in the SEC (an increasingly formal event), in the winter they have a great selection of vintage sweaters, and now they have wonderful bright-colored, lighter pieces for spring! They also have a men’s section, but I don’t shop for men,  so if you do, you should go check it out and get back to me. My favorite thing about Northgate Vintage, however, is their jewelry. Jewelry has become a recent obsession of mine. It can add variety and interest to your wardrobe, and dresses up otherwise basic outfits. The jewelry at Northgate Vintage is always in step with the current trends, but still unique. There is something for everyone, from classic stud earrings to over-the-top statement necklaces. And it’s super affordable, most of the earrings are $6-$7, and the necklaces are $11-$15. So that means you can buy a lot and not feel bad about overspending! I have purchased a few baubles from Northgate Vintage this year, and they have made countless appearances in my wardrobe ever since!

The beginnings of an extensive collection.

These gold earrings were my first purchase from Northgate Vintage, marking the commencement of my obsession. I bought them in the fall when gold and chevron was all the rage. They are a little bold, which is not what I would originally gravitate towards, but I have loved them! I’ve paired them with a sheer maroon and white top for gameday, a blazer and boots for dinner, and a simple tank and skirt for going out!

Next we have these adorable little clothes hanger earrings. I saw these and knew that I had to have them! I also bought my sister a matching pair for Christmas, and she loves them too! The fact that they’re clothes hangers conveys my passion for fashion, and I love the touch of whimsy from the mismatched pearls and rhinestones. I wear these with anything and everything! I’ll throw them on with a t-shirt and leggings for class, or if I’m wearing a shirt or dress with a busy pattern. They have also become my go-to earrings for silver jewelry days.

These grey chandelier earrings are also something I wouldn’t normally buy, but they have proved to be new favorites as well! Grey is a new favorite neutral of mine, so I love how these go with lots of different outfits. As of right now I’ve only worn them once, with a cotton dress with a small light pink and cornflower blue floral print, a blue jean jacket, and boots. I tried them on, not expecting them to match, but they did! I also plan to wear them with a cute cream, lace peplum top I just purchased!
Now for one of my absolute favorites. These teal teardrop oversized studs complete my life. Well, they nearly complete my wardrobe. I’m loving teal for spring and summer, and I’m thinking it will transition into fall as well! The teardrop shape makes them different from your average studs. I wear these with many different things, such as a blazer and boots, a solid black longsleeve tee and mustard jeans, and even dresses! They’re beautiful and interesting, yet still simple enough to wear with busy outfits.
Don’t you just love it when you find something that’s been at the top of your wishlist forever? That’s what happened when I found this light pink statement necklace. Statement necklaces have been growing exponentially in popularity, and it was seriously stressing me out that I hadn’t jumped on the trendy train yet. I like this because it’s not too extreme but it’s still an attention-getter. I also really like the color, it’s more versatile than I expected! I typically wear this with solid tees and a cardigan, both of which I hoard, so I have plenty of options. I’m also looking forward to trying this with my new peplum top I mentioned earlier!
I absolutely adore all of my baubles from Northgate Vintage, and I look forward to returning soon for another shopping spree! In addition to their merchandise, I admire this business because they give back to the College Station and global community. They have hosted numerous profit shares for organizations and sororities benefiting their philanthropies, and they carry products whose profits benefit people around the world, such as TOMS, bracelets and headbands made by women in third-world countries, and makeup that fights human trafficking. So, the next time you’re down in Aggieland, stop by Northgate Vintage for a unique College Station shopping experience! Or check them out online or on Facebook!
Until Next Time!
