Packing List: Beach Trip

Hey Cats!

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I went to the pool twice, slept in, got sub-par pedicures with my besties, and  bought the cutest flamingo tee, so I would say it was a success. But today it’s back to work!

In a few weeks, I’m headed to Florida on vacation with two of my friends, and I’m beside myself with excitement! This is my first big trip with just my friends, so it should be tons of fun! Not to mention I love the beach. I’ve had months to procure the perfect pieces to stuff into my suitcase, and I’ve honestly probably spent way too much money. But whatever. Here’s what will be in my bag:

 FullSizeRender (4)

I tried so hard to find a new swimsuit for this trip, but I couldn’t find anything I liked. But I have plenty of suits from past summers that I still love, so it’s okay! I’m bringing my monogrammed bandeau from Marley Lilly paired with coral bottoms, which is probably my favorite swimsuit ever. I’m also bringing a one piece, since one pieces are in right now. I’ve had this one since high school so obviously it’s no longer available, but I’m loving this palm print, this simple blue, and this bright Mara Hoffman suit! My third suit is from Old Navy and also is no longer available, but this one is really similar!

I bought this monogrammed floppy hat for two reasons: my Kentucky Derby-themed Junior League party this week and the beach. They have so many fun colors, but I chose blue because it matches my Lilly dress I’m wearing to the event (insert hair flip emoji). It also matches my cover-up! I’m loving the simple white with blue stitching! I bought it at Forever 21, but unfortunately can’t find it online (I did see one in the store this weekend!), but I’m loving this similar option, this similar color scheme, or this colorful caftan!

FullSizeRender (5)

We’re planning on going to do lots of fun things like snorkeling and riding jet skis, so honestly I will probably be wearing Norts and a tee for those activities. But I will need a few cute outfits, of course! I’m bringing my new flamingo tee paired with my favorite boyfriend shorts, which will be perfect for exploring! I’m also bringing my leopard shorts and black tank, which will be great for a casual dinner. Of course, I can’t forget this integral part of my romper collection. It’s Lilly for Target (from the kid’s section), but I love this Lilly Pulitzer option, this solid blue, and this cute print!

image1 (2)

I don’t anticipate going out too much, except for fancy dinner one night. But we’re still three weeks out and I cannot decide for the life of me what outfit to bring! It’s a stressor for me right now. I’m loving this striped romper (similar options here, here, and here) and nude heel combo, but I’m also loving the below options!

FullSizeRender (7)

I bought this black romper a few months back and I’m in love! I think it’s definitely going to be a staple this summer. There’s also my bird dress that I’m obsessed with and am always looking for excuses to wear. P.S., if birds aren’t your thing but you still want to wear something out of the box, try this dress! It’s on my “to buy” list for sure.

So that’s it! Those are the only pieces I’m taking to the beach. And if you believe that, you obviously don’t know me. What are your beach essentials? Let me know!

That’s all for meow!

Instagram Round-Up

Hey Cats!

I’m back! It’s been about 3 months since I’ve blogged. What? I just got so busy with work and life that Sweet Cats! was pushed past the back burner and basically off the stove altogether. It made me sad, and I’ve been dying to get back to blogging, but I just haven’t had the time. Until now, when I got sicky and had to stay home for a few days! I’m not promising regular posts right now, but maybe a few!

It has been way longer than I thought since I last did an Instagram Round-Up…the last one was in July! Yikes! So some of these may be a little (okay a lot) out of season (looking at you, monogrammed bathing suit), but whatever. Just put it on your list for the summer, it’s never too early for that! Don’t forget to follow along on the Blogstagram (@sweetcatsblog) to see my most recent posts!

I’m obsessed with this JCrew Factory skirt! It was great during the summer with my white swiss dot tank, and will be great in the fall with tights and riding boots! Here, I paired it with my JCrew Factory chambray, watch, Marley Lilly tassel bracelet (c/o), and a statement necklace (similar).  This is a great polished look for work or church!

Beautiful earrings for pierced ears. I hope you caught that reference to one of my favorite books as a child! I had been searching high and low for a tiny “K” earring for my third hole. I finally found one at Nordstrom, and it has become a permanent fixture on my earlobe. I wore my Kendra Scott Alexandra earrings in Chalcedony, and I thought it was a great pair!

Okay, okay, I know it’s February. But this is one of my favorite Instas ever. I paired my Marley Lilly monogrammed bandeau top with some bright coral swim bottoms (similar), grabbed my shades, $5 infused water from Whole Foods (this was before I had really grasped the concept of budgeting), and a pool read, and headed to the pool for one of the two times I went this summer.

Yaaaaas the Greased Lightening dress! I love this little frock so much that I gave it a name, as you do. They don’t have this print anymore, but they do have it in the blue marble print, which my sister has and I love! I also have it in pink, because it’s so comfy for work!

I’m literally obsessed with my Vera Bradley duffel. It’s like a Mary Poppins bag, you can just keep stuffing things inside and it never seems to fill up. This particular trip was for my birthday (in August lolz), and I packed my trusty denim shorts from Old Navy and my favorite little bird dress from SheInside. Also, this fluffy pink bedding makes me feel like a princess, and that’s the best feeling ever.

Holy Shift. This is my score from the Lilly After Party Sale, and I honestly didn’t get to wear it enough before fall rolled around. This dress is no longer available, but I’m loving this one! I like to go for a classic look with my Lilly, pairing it with nude heels, a string of pearls layered with my monogrammed necklace, and my scalloped monogrammed clutch, c/o Marley Lilly. So Southern I almost can’t even handle myself.

I had my eye on both of these BaubleBar pieces for quite some time. I love love LOVE BaubleBar, but it’s honestly too expensive for me to buy on a regular basis. But! They have awesome sales! Pro Tip: sign up for their emails- then you’ll get all the info. They have at least one piece for under $30 (a lot of the time it’s even $10 or $15!) each week! I got an excellent deal on these EKG studs that I wear nearly every day and this #obsessed dainty bracelet. The bracelet isn’t available anymore, but they have plenty of other dainty options!

loft skirt This is my favorite fall outfit! It’s one of those that I have to limit myself on wearing, because I would wear it every day. This blanket skirt from Loft is a fun addition to my autumn wardrobe. I paired it with a long-sleeved solid black tee, tights, and riding boots. To add some sparkle, I wore my Kendra Scott Rayne necklace in Pyrite (color bar only) and this fierce Gilded Leo Cuff by Baublebar (another Buried Bauble steal).

This was a big one! Fingers crossed that I will stay more on top of Instagram round-ups in the future.

That’s all for meow!

Red, White, and Blue

Hey Cats!

Hopefully everyone’s week is off to a good start! And even if it’s not, it’s going to be a short week, so you won’t have to deal with it for a long time. I’m excited to get a chance to sleep late an extra day, and maybe go shopping because #payday. Except maybe not because I’m still terrified to spend money because I’m still trying to learn how to be an adult. But I digress.

July 4th is such a fun holiday in my opinion. I wish more holidays were in the summer, just because it’s more fun to be at the lake or outside than inside and cold. Also, I love picking out a red, white, and blue outfit to wear to whatever get-together I’ll be attending. I bought a super cute red bandana-like tank last summer, and I’ve promised myself that I was going to wear that with my blue jean shorts. But if I hadn’t planned ahead, which is usually the case, here are a few things I would be considering for the 4th!

firework shorts

How adorable are these Fireworks shorts from Old Navy? I almost want to go buy them and wear them instead of my other shirt! Plus, they’re under $15 right now, which gives you a great excuse to run out and buy them if you don’t know what you’re wearing yet. Paired with a white eyelet tank or a red solid tee, these would be the perfect pants for a backyard barbecue!

This flag scarf from Sideline Sass would be the perfect way to spice up an outfit of basic pieces, like white jeans and a black tank. But only if you’re planning on being inside, because hot.

If you’re looking for a slightly more girly option, a sundress is a perfect choice. This Monterey Tank dress from Lilly Pulitzer is a wonderful combination of patriotic and feminine, mostly because it has a little touch of pink!

If you’re planning at hanging out by the pool or at the lake all day, this Stars & Stripes bikini is an easy way to squeeze red, white, and blue into your day. Pair this with a cute cover-up and lots of sunscreen!

And as always, it’s not the 4th of July without this little gem:

pauletteI hope you all look like a true patriot this Independence Day, whatever you choose to wear. That’s what Paulette would want.

A Shorts Story

Hey Cats!

It may be the end of June, but it’s finally starting to feel like summer in Houston! It’s warmer, and most importantly, it’s finally stopped raining…at least for about a week. I love shorts, sundresses, sandals, and tanks, so whenever summer weather rolls around, I get really excited! Unfortunately, I can’t wear too much of that to work, but I don’t think that will stop me from buying a whole closet full anyways.

The first thing I get excited about is sandals, because free feet, obviously. Following closely behind that is shorts, because my legs can also be free. Basically, I don’t like to be trapped in clothing of any kind, and summer is a great time to give my appendages a chance to breathe. This summer, I’ve had my eye on a few pairs of shorts that I’d love to add to my closet. I’ve previously discussed the importance of a good pair of denim shorts, and the basic color chinos everyone needs, so what I’m looking at this season is a little less practical, but a lot more fun.

These Buttercup Scallop Hem shorts from Lilly Pulitzer are everything I want to be in life: cute, classic, a little unexpected, and an all-around favorite. I mean, they’re scalloped, what more could you want? I am definitely planning on taking a pair of these home for myself, once I decide what pattern I want…they’re all so pretty! These would look cute with a solid, loose-fitting tee and sandals for brunch, or with a chambray and a pair of wedges for dinner at the beach!

Up next are these JCrew Factory chinos in Alpine Blue. Honestly, you can never have too many chinos, and it’s my personal mission to own every color. Last summer I bought the festival blue, and in addition to this pair, I want the vibrant flame pair, too. The thing I love about JCrew chinos is that they’re durable, classic, flattering, and you can always get a good deal on them if you just keep your eye on the website! They’re actually $19.50 right now, but I’m working on not spending all my money, so I’m going to have to control myself until I get my next paycheck. Pray for me.

These Larkin shorts from Sideline Sass would be perfect for going out! They’re fancy and fun, but they also have an elastic waistband which is always a dream come true. The girly lace trim is also a nice touch. These could be dressed up or down, but I think they would be perfect paired with a navy tank, a tassel necklace, and sandals for a casual night out.

These tassel shorts from SheInside are a great way to have a little fun without going too crazy. I’m loving the tassel trend this summer, and this would be an easy way to give it a try. Plus, they’re under $15 right now! These would look great with a crisp, white structured top, or even over a swimsuit at the beach or pool.

What shorts are you thinking about adding to your closet this year? Let me know!

Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

Yay for Friday! I’m super excited for this weekend, because I get to see my sister and the rest of my family! I only got to see my sister a couple of times the week I was at home before I moved, so I can’t wait to see her and show her my new apartment! She and her husband have a wedding in Houston, so I will see them before, and then I’m riding with them to my dad’s side of the family’s family reunion, where I will see my parents!

It’s been a great first full week of work! Here’s what else I’ve been loving this week:

1. The Pioneer Woman’s Crunchy French Toast

Well, she’s done it again. Ree Drummond, my culinary hero and fellow Aggie basketball lover posted a picture of this DIVINE-looking French Toast on her Instagram page last week, and I had to know what made it crunchy. GUYS. She breaded her French Toast in Panko bread crumbs and then cooked it in butter. I’m dead. I need it. I don’t know when I’ll use the rest of a loaf of bread, but I have to try it. Maybe Saturday morning? Yes.

2. Monogrammed Wrapping Paper

Just when I thought we had run out of objects to monogram, they found another one. This monogrammed gift wrap from Ann Page is the only way I will accept gifts from this day forward. Just kidding, I accept gifts in any form. Always. But really, how adorable is this? Just so Southern. Except I do have one question…do you get it with your monogram, or the monogram of the person you’re giving the gift to? If you have any clarification, please share.

3. JCrew Chino Shorts

Since it’s warm now, I will inevitably buy a new color of JCrew chino shorts. They’re just the best, and they’re always such a good deal during the summer! This year, I have my eye on this vibrant flame pair. How cute would these be with a white eyelet tank? Too cute.

4. What’s Gaby Cooking Instagram

One of my favorite ways to waste time is by scrolling through the Discover page of Instagram. Mine is typically filled with pictures of food, and I’m not even sorry about it, because this has led to my discovery of multiple delicious Instagram accounts, and blogs too! My latest unearthed treasure? What’s Gaby Cooking. Just look at those delicious burgers, fresh produce, and yummy desserts! She also has a pretty cool blog where she tells you how to make all of these treats. Check it out!

5. Weekend Inspiration

Eat more tacos. Duh.

I hope you all have a great weekend! That’s all for meow!

New Boyfriend

Hey Cats!

I’m in love and I don’t care who knows!

No, not with a boy. I’ve finally found the perfect pair of denim shorts, and I can’t really get over it. Denim shorts have always been a touchy subject for me, I can never seem to find a pair that fits me how I want them to. They’re either a trashy level of too short or a mom level of too long, neither of which is flattering. So the other day when I was shopping with my mom, we wandered into Old Navy and saw that their shorts were on sale for $15, a great deal. My mom suggested that I try some on, and I did, expecting that they’d fit like everything else. I tried on a few pairs and was pleasantly surprised by The Boyfriend Cuffed Shorts.

They sit right at the hips, and fit well, but still a little loose. I LOVE the length, and you can roll them down if you want! Also, I usually stay away from distressed denim, because I feel it makes the shorts/pants exclusively casual, but I actually really like the distressed details on these- it’s perfect for summer. I bought these last Saturday and I’ve already worn them twice, so it’s safe to say that I’m obsessed with my latest Boyfriend. (I’m probably having too much fun with this…whatever.) If you’re looking for a new pair of shorts, head over to Old Navy- they have a great selection and great prices!

DIY-Summer Shorts

Hey Cats!

As I mentioned last week, “re-purposing shorts” has been on my to-do list for two summers now. I bought all the supplies last year, but I never quite got around to making them. This summer, I was determined to finish (and start) the project. Before we go any further, let me be frank. This isn’t really going to be a detailed tutorial on how to embellish your denim shorts. I forgot to take too many crucial photographs along the way, and honestly, my mom did most of the sewing for me. Sewing isn’t really my thing. I wish it was, but I just can’t do it and I don’t really know why. This post serves as inspirational rather than instructional. That being said, you may be able to pick up a few tips along the way!

First, gather your supplies. You will need an old pair of jeans, (or capris, or shorts!) fabric, and embellishments of your choice. I chose these capri pants I’ve had since maybe about the eighth grade. A good tip from my friend China (we’ve been friends since before the eighth grade) is to get your jeans (if you’re buying them from a thrift store) a size larger so they will fit like shorts in the legs, instead of tight like jeans! I also chose a tribal-print fabric for an extra summery vibe, silver studs, and giant gold rick-rack that I ended up not using.

photo (42)

Next, cut a considerable amount off of your pants. Cut them longer than you think you’ll want them, because you can always cut off more, but you can’t add it back! This is also the time to decide whether or not you want to hem or cuff the edges, or leave them to fray, because this will have an effect on the length. I cut one side, then folded it over to cut the other side, to make sure they were even.

image (45)

Next, cut your fabric to fit where you’re going to place it. I chose to do a panel of fabric on the front right side, and on the back left pocket. You’ll want to cut it a bit larger on each side so you can iron a small fold to avoid fraying ends. You can see on the pocket picture that it doesn’t fit-this picture was taken before I enlisted the help of my mother. I re-cut the fabric for the pocket, using parchment paper to trace the pocket as a pattern. Basically, if my mom didn’t help, I probably wouldn’t have finished these.

image (46)

image (47)

Next, sew it on! I have little to no advice when it comes to working a sewing machine, so you’ll have to find someone else to help you with that if you don’t know how either. Godspeed.

Here’s the finished product! You can see on the opposite pocket that I inserted a few of the studs. I might add more later, but it was kind of hard so I gave up.

image (48)

I chose to roll the ends, but you could either hem them, leave them to fray, or add trim! If you do roll them, I would suggest tacking them so they don’t come unrolled.

image (49)

I’m really pleased with how these turned out, and I’m excited to wear them! I think they would look cute with either a solid tee or a flowy tank.

Hopefully you gained a few tips or a little inspiration for your own denim upgrade!

In My Closet-Chino Shorts

Hey Cats!

This is my last week at home before I head back to College Station for the fall! I’m just hanging out at home, packing up my stuff and making last-minute purchases for my new house with my besties! I can’t wait to live with them! Today, I’m doing another “In My Closet” post, a series that features an item of clothing that I personally own, and feel is a staple in the wardrobe of a fashion-forward young woman.

photo (38)

Today, I chose to feature my chino shorts. In case you’re wondering, “chino” is a type of twill fabric that is 100% cotton (thanks, Google.) They are a major component of my summer wardrobe, and they are so versatile! All three pairs, khaki, gray, and black are from JCrew-once I bought my first pair, I couldn’t wear anything else! They are so comfortable, and I love the way they fit me. They ring in at about $45, but you can definitely find them on sale multiple times throughout the summer- even though they are worth the investment, considering I’ve had my khaki pair for going on 4 years, and they’re still good as new! The cut and pockets make them look a bit more dressy, so I can wear them with a cute top and wedges to go out, but not too dressy where they will look out of place with a tee shirt and sandals. Neutral colors, like I have, make them even more versatile and beneficial to your wardrobe. However, there are some really great bright colors out there as well! Next on my list are cobalt blue, neon yellow, red, and white. I might as well stock up, because I don’t see these shorts going out of style anytime soon- they’re a new classic!

What’s your favorite way to wear chino shorts?

Outfit of the Day- Sassy Pants

Hey Cats!

August 3rd was my 21st birthday! It was a great weekend, and I got a couple of outfit posts out of the deal, too! One night I went to dinner with my family at my favorite Mexican food restaurant in Tyler.

photo (31)

I didn’t realize that I wasn’t looking at the camera until it was too late, so I’m stuck with this awkward photo. I wanted to wear something cute and comfortable, and I’ve been saving these shorts for my birthday! I saw these a while back and loved them, but it was back before I started working, so they weren’t really high on my purchase list. But, one weekend after payday, I was at Dillard’s and we met again–this time they were on sale. I immediately added them to my collection. I love these because of the bright colors and mixture of patterns- so fierce! They are no longer available, but this chevron print is a cute option! I paired it with my white flowy top from Loft (similar) and my new wedges from Target. I added earrings from Northgate Vintage, a Lily and Laura bracelet, and my kate spade bangle.

photo (32)

This picture is a better angle, and it’s with my sister! Check out the details of her outfit here, and stay tuned for the rest of my birthday outfits!

Outfit of the Day- Summertime Scarf & Shorts

Hey Cats!

During the summer, I live in solid tees and JCrew shorts! I usually wear them by themselves, but tonight I decided to dress it up a bit!

photo (11)

I started with a simple white tee from Old Navy and black chino shorts from JCrew Factory. I added my favorite scarf from Target for a pop of neon, and finished the look with my turquoise Elle earrings from Kendra Scott and these fabulous gold glitter smoking slippers, also from Target (I got them a while ago, so they don’t have them anymore!)
