Father’s Day Gift Guide

Hey Cats!

Did anyone else have a rough time getting going this week? Because I did. I was nearly late to work yesterday because I was being a slowpoke and just wanted to crawl back in bed. It also didn’t help that I couldn’t decide what to wear, and tried on about four different outfits before I gave up because I had five minutes to do my hair and makeup. Hashtag Monday. But it’s Tuesday and I went to bed super early last night, so I should have it together today, but stay tuned.

As do all important holidays, Father’s Day snuck up on me this year. Did you know it’s June 22? It is. That’s a little under 3 weeks from now… yikes! Also, my dad’s birthday is the 24th, so I’m probably just going to order both gifts at the same time. My dad and I are besties, and I always like to get him something special, and now that I actually have a job, I can buy him something a little nicer than a belt or a tie. Here are a few things I’m considering:

fishing-shirt

Dads love fishing shirts, like this Columbia shirt from Academy.  I would totally get my dad one of these, but he has like, at least five. I know he would probably love another one, but I think this is what I’ve gotten him for the past couple of years. I think dads like these because they can wear them basically anywhere. To the lake, to a football game, or even a casual dinner. I mean, I even have a couple myself. Everyone loves these. Buy matching ones for you and your dad for extra points.

boot-bag

My dad has quite the collection of boots, something we have in common. We all hate traveling with boots, because they take up so much space, and if they get dirty (which is inevitable), you don’t want to put them back in your suitcase. If your dad likes to lug his Luccheses whenever he goes on a trip, this boot bag from Jon Hart is an excellent choice. You can even personalize it, which if you think I love monogramming my own objects, imagine how much I love monogramming gifts for others…about 5x as much.

SCHEDULE.0

Another great option is football tickets, or tickets to another sporting event. My parents have season tickets to Aggie games, but I am considering getting my dad tickets to a Rice game (not sure if my dad reads my blog, but if he does I may have just ruined the surprise. So oops.), since he played football at Rice, and now that I live in Houston, it would be an easy trip!

757df0d1fc30e0b5d5e1b20d0df0b6

My dad is a real estate agent, so he always carries business cards. I’ve almost bought him this business card case from Marley Lilly three different times, but I always run out of time to order it! I think it would be a good way for him to keep track of his cards when he’s out and about!

What are you thinking about getting your dad for father’s day? Let me know!

That’s all for meow!

Monday’s Musings- A Few Updates

Hey Cats!

I feel like I haven’t blogged in maybe 20 years. I’ve wanted to, and I’ve had so many good ideas, but what I haven’t had is time. The past few weeks have been out. of. control. So much has been happening that I feel like I’ve been living in an actual tornado. A happy tornado, though. If that’s a thing. My life has changed so much so quickly, and I’m so excited to finally have time to share it with you!

First, on May 1, I accepted a job offer, which was when the happy/busy tornado began. I was beyond excited, because it’s a healthcare administration position in a pediatric office in the Houston area, which is basically everything I wanted out of a career. When I was applying for jobs, I thought I could probably manage to get one of those three things, two if  I was lucky, but definitely not all three. I’ve already started, but I’m still so excited about starting my career!

My start date for my job was May 26, and graduation was May 16, so my last two weeks in College Station consisted of me scrambling to find a place to live in Houston, packing up my house, hanging out with all of my friends for (hopefully not really) the last time, soaking up the last days of college life, and, of course, graduation. It was such a whirlwind with lots of emotions, and I loved every second of it.

Some of my best friends and I right before graduation.

Some of my best friends and I right before graduation.

After graduation, I went home to Tyler for a week before I moved to Houston. It was nice to be with my family, but it was also really busy, since I had to help my dad paint some of my furniture, pack up my room, and (try) to clean up and not leave my parents with a mess! It was a little sad to leave, knowing that I was about to be actually, really, 100% on my own in Houston, but I was excited! My parents helped me move in last weekend, and my first week of work has been great! I also love my apartment, but I’m not sure what to do with all this free time I have now that I don’t have homework or tests!

I'm an educated woman!

I’m an educated woman!

It’s been a lot of change in a small amount of time, but I know that it was time for a change. I absolutely loved college, and my four years in Aggieland will always be some of my favorite years of my life. But, near the end, I could tell that I was “outgrowing” college, and I was ready to have real responsibilities and be more of an adult. I’m excited for this new stage of my life, and I’m excited to share it all with you on the blog!

Campus Chic

Hey Cats!

My name is Kristen, and I think I really like sports. Like a lot. This is somewhat of a recent development, and I’m really surprised by it. I even told my mom that I might want to work for a professional sports team, so it’s getting pretty serious. I mean, I’ve always liked football- I’m from Texas and my dad was a coach, so most of my fall Friday nights since birth were spent at football games. And I started to like basketball in high school, when I would cheer at the games. But besides Aggie football games, sporting events are never something I’ve just been dying to go to, until now. I’ve had multiple weekends this semester where I would go to a baseball game and a basketball game, and I even went to two on the same day. Stop. Part of me thinks that it’s because I’m trying to soak up the last bits of my Aggieland experience (true), but I also think I’m developing more diverse interests, which is always a good thing. So now let’s talk about my main interest: clothes.

Just because I’m gaining a sporty side doesn’t mean my wardrobe is going to suffer. I still like to piece together a spirited yet polished look for games- something that says, “I appreciate a good dunk, but I’m still going to talk to my friends when I get bored”. Obviously.

image1

It was still a little chilly at the last basketball game I went to, so I wore my favorite cream sweater from JCPenney, which I have seriously worn the crap out of this winter. I realized I kept wearing the same thing when it showed up in three of my Instagram posts. In a row. Oops. I added a maroon pashmina (similar) and my monogrammed clutch from Benevolent Jewels (20% off with coupon KCODE20!) for a chic touch of my school colors. I threw on my versatile brown Gianni Bini booties, and then capped it all off with my Aggie baseball cap (similar). I like the casual vibe it adds to the outfit, plus my hair was icky that day so everyone wins.

image2

So let’s talk about this clutch a little bit more. I bought this during football season, because that’s when the outfits really matter, and it has proved a great investment to my gameday wardrobe. You can fit your keys, your phone, and your ticket inside and it’s perfect for a day of tailgating/watching the game! Plus it has a chain so you can wear it as a crossbody, which I usually do. There are a rainbow of both clutches and thread colors, so whether you’re a Baylor Bear, a Carolina Tar Heel, an Ole Miss Rebel or anything in-between, they’ve got you covered! It’s the perfect fashionable and functional addition to any sporting event ensemble.

This week is just getting started, but it’s looking to be a busy one- mainly because I stopped doing homework the Wednesday before Spring Break and now I have to catch up. #SeniorYear. With that being said, I will be goin’ up on this Tuesday-up to my hole, reading Marketing and blogging on my breaks.

Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

Happy Friday! This week has flown by, which I can’t decide if I love or hate. Also, the weather. Who can I talk to about the disparities in frozen road distribution across Texas? Because it seems like literally everyone had snow days except for College Station. I mean, it snowed at Baylor in Waco, which isn’t an hour and a half away, so basically three feet in weather distance. And in Tyler, my parents and sister either had early dismissal or just didn’t go to work Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. They would tell me that they were all sitting in the living room by the fire as I sat in my office trying to defrost my fingers after my trudge across campus. But I digress.

It’s been an eventful couple of weeks, so I’m sure I could do Friday’s Fifteen- but I’ll spare you. Here’s what I’ve been loving lately:

1. Meeting the Pioneer Woman

pioneer-woman

Something about senior year makes you want to do everything you’ve been meaning to do for the past four years, because “I’ll never get to do this again!”. For me, that was attending three sporting events in the span of five days. Shocking, I know. Actually, I have really enjoyed basketball since I was in high school, and Aggie basketball is 15x better. Anyways, I went to the game against LSU last Tuesday night with my friend Shelbie, and lo and behold, Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman was in attendance. She is my culinary hero, and I’ve always said that I would be open to living on a ranch only if I could be as fabulous as she is. We walked over to the section she was in and asked her to take a few pictures, and she was sweet enough to take one with each one of us! She told us that her daughter Alex had just been accepted to Texas A&M, and asked us why she should choose Aggieland. I think I said something really vague along the lines of “it’s the best!”, but what I really meant was, “This place means the world to me. Not only have I received the highest quality education, but I’ve made the best of friends. I’ve learned so much about my faith, myself, and other people. There’s a sense of friendship among literally everyone here that’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and I know that I’ll be a part of that even after I graduate. But most importantly, this place has given me the skills to become the type of person I always wanted to be, but never really had the confidence to be.” (#senioryearsap) But obviously, that would have been a little long-winded. So we snapped our photos, thanked Ree and told her that Alex would be making the best decision of her life by becoming an Aggie, and skipped back to our seats to witness a very exciting Aggie victory over those silly LSU kitties.

2. French Toast in a Mug

french-toast-mug

I don’t know what it is, but something about making food in a mug just gets me really excited. I think it’s because I feel like there aren’t as many things to clean up afterwards, but let’s be honest, I am a walking mess so “minimal cleanup” is kind of a pipe dream for me. I found this recipe for French Toast in a mug on Pretty Prudent, and it looks like a wonderful option for Saturday breakfast. Also how cute is that mug?

3. #LlamaDrama

llamas

Yesterday, the Internet completely lost its mind. First came the Great Llama Chase of 2015, and the “what color is this dress?” debacle (which I will not address-you people have too much time on your hands, go do some homework.). Most important, obviously, is the high-speed llama chase. This Buzzfeed article provides excellent footage of two llamas frolicking through the streets of Arizona. Bless them. Also those little suckers are FAST. Just look at ’em go.

4.The Skimm

the-skimm

As I may have shared before, I love to start my day with The Skimm! There is SO MUCH going on in the world, and I’m not just talking about llama chases and silly debates about color. The Skimm is a daily email that gives you a quick overview of important issues- ISIS, Israel, the Keystone XL Pipeline, and the like. It’s important to stay informed, so if you haven’t subscribed, do it right now!

5. Tildon Dress

tildon-dress

A few weeks ago, I went to Houston to visit my bestie Ashley, and I tried on this Tildon shift dress at Nordstrom. I couldn’t justify buying it, because I had just bought a similar dress that I hadn’t even worn yet. And then last week, I bought yet another similar dress that I have yet to wear. But I kind of can’t stop thinking about this dress- the cut is very flattering, and the colors are so much fun! I don’t really need it, so I’m going to try and control myself, but no promises. If anyone feels like talking me into buying it, be my guest.

That’s all for meow! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend- and stay warm!

Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

Happy Friday! I’m SO EXCITED for this weekend, because my bestie is coming to visit! I haven’t seen her  since before school started, so I can’t wait to catch up with her. This week has still been busy, but not as much as the past few, so it’s been nice to have a chance to rest and not be running around in a panic for a few days. Here’s what I’m loving this week:

1.

donut pumpkins

It’s fall, y’all! How adorable are these little donut pumpkins from Smart Schoolhouse? Pink sprinkle donuts are my all-time fave, so I would love to make a few of these to set out in the kitchen!

2.With my super busy schedule, I feel like I’ve been going nonstop for the past few weeks. While I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that if I want to have a fun and successful senior year there won’t be much down time, it’s something I really miss. This week, I was blessed with some extra free time to rest and do things I wanted to do, like cook dinner and go to the gym on the same night, and do things I needed to do like catch up on homework. Sometimes it’s the little things like a canceled class or a meeting cut short that remind me that God knows exactly what I need, and if I’m using my time and talents to glorify Him, He will provide me with the time to fit it all in.

3.

kate and samantha

My cousin shared this goldmine of an article with me a week or so ago that shows us Kate Middleton’s true celebrity lookalike- Samantha Parkington. I don’t know who came up with this, but they’re a genius. Just scroll through and tell me Kate doesn’t look like she’s been dressed (impeccably) by Grandmary. YOU CAN’T.

4.

quinoa patties

I made these delicious sweet potato quinoa patties for dinner Wednesday night, and they were quite yummy! I had a baked sweet potato in my fridge because I’d cooked it on 250 (rookie mistake) and by the time it was done, I was finished with the rest of my dinner and not hungry. I’d planned to heat it up for my dinner, but then I remembered this recipe! So delicious, and it makes quite a few- I took the leftovers in my lunch on Thursday, and they were still great!

5.

btho ole miss

Last but certainly not least, there’s a HUGE game in Aggieland tomorrow! It’s expected to be the largest crowd ever at Kyle Field, and I’m pumped. WHOOP!

Jewelry- My Essential 5

Hey Cats!

Happy Thursday! I’m so excited, because not only am I going home this weekend, but tonight I’m going to see the Backstreet Boys and Avril Lavigne! The summer after I graduated from high school, I went to see the Backstreet Boys when they toured with NKOTB with my friends Kinsey and Emma, and it was everything. I can’t wait to see my boys again- and Avril Lavigne is a special treat so I can relive my brief fifth-grade punk bad girl phase (don’t ask).

It’s no secret that I love my jewelry, and I love to mix it up every day depending on what I’m wearing. I shared my everyday jewelry a few months ago, but the other day I was thinking, “If I could only have five pieces of jewelry, what would they be?” If that ever happens I don’t know what I’ll do with myself, but it was definitely interesting to think about. It took me a while to come up with only five things I couldn’t part with- some were obvious, but some took a little more thought. Here’s what I came up with!

photo (77)

First are my pearls. Technically this is two pieces, but it’s my hypothetical situation so I get to make the rules. Pearl earrings and a necklace are typically thought of as a set, so it still counts as just one. I got my pearls the Christmas after I turned 18- it’s a tradition in my family. I love my pearls because they’re a classic, and a perfect, Southern addition to nearly any ensemble.

watch

Next is my Michael Kors watch. I wear this every day, whether I’m wearing a dress or just Nike shorts and a tee shirt. It’s a classic piece, and it’s a staple in my jewelry box- I couldn’t go without it!

cross necklace black

Next is my dainty, sideways cross necklace. I love this because it’s a great reminder of my faith, and also because it’s so dainty. It can stand alone or be layered- very versatile!

cat earrings

I also chose my favorite cat earrings. It’s no secret that I love kitties, and I actually have quite the collection of cat-themed jewelry. What I love about these studs is that they’re whimsical yet practical. They’re a fun shape, but a classic color with a little sparkle. I typically wear these when I’m wanting something simple.

photo (76)

Last, I chose my Aggie ring. Duh. It’s the most valuable piece of jewelry I own, mostly because it cost me 90 hours of studying, sweat, and tears. It represents one of my greatest accomplishments and it’s something I’m very proud of. I also think that it’s beautiful- shiny gold with intricate detailing and a diamond in the center. Out of all the jewelry I own, this is definitely my favorite.

What are your essential 5? Let me know!

Monday’s Musings

Hey Cats!

I know that the last thing I posted was also a Monday’s Musings post, but things happen- or don’t happen. The only really exciting thing I did was eat my weight in creamy jalapeno dip at Chuy’s with my prayer group in the middle of the week, so Friday’s Five would have been incredibly dull. In order to redeem myself, however, I have literally everything in my life happening this week, so get excited.

What I’m mostly looking forward to is Friday at 5:15 when I FINALLY get my Fightin’ Texas Aggie Ring! The Aggie ring is a huge tradition at Texas A&M, and one of my favorites. I will be the seventh person in my family to earn one, starting with my grandfather in 1941. Not only is this important because of my family, but because of the values the ring and the University stands for.

Aggie Ring pic

I have been looking forward to this day ever since I decided to become an Aggie. Sometimes I can’t believe I’m old enough to be getting my ring, but other times when I look back on the blood, sweat, tears, and 90 hours I endured to earn it, I’m more than ready for my little piece of gold. So, as I go through this week, I will be thinking about how much I love this University, how I have enjoyed my time here, and how honored I am to be able to wear the symbol of the Greatest University in the World.

Sideline Sass Boutique

Hey Cats!

I hope everyone had a great Valentine’s Day this weekend- I know I did! My roommates and I went to dinner Friday night, and on Saturday I went to an Aggie baseball game with some of my friends. I’ll be honest- baseball isn’t exactly my favorite sport (I told one of my guy friends that it was the first time I’d ever stayed all nine innings at a baseball game and he was appalled). However, Aggie baseball is a different experience- the student section is quite hilarious.

My all-time favorite college sport is Aggie football, obviously. I’ve been lucky to witness some exciting things since I came to Texas A&M in the Fall of 2011- the move to the SEC, a shocking win over #1 ranked Alabama in 2012, and, of course, Johnny Manziel. There’s nothing that compares to gameday in Aggieland, and one of my favorite parts of gameday is getting dressed up. For real.

Ever since we entered the SEC, gameday style has gotten increasingly more formal. My freshman year I would wear Nike shorts and a maroon tee shirt, but the tables have definitely turned! Unfortunately, it’s really challenging to find Aggie maroon. There’s raspberry, crimson, and red galore, but if you find something that fits in true Aggie maroon, it’s a poor choice to not buy it immediately. I recently stumbled across Sideline Sass, an Aggie-owned online boutique that carries a variety of affordable gameday attire- in the right maroon- it’s a miracle!

Some of my favorites:

maroon shorts

These Must Be Maroon shorts are definitely a staple for August and September games. I love the fun, floral pattern on these, it definitely dresses them up!

maroon sweater

Next is this Knit Together sweater. I love the solid panels on the shoulders mixed with the variegated body. This would be a great option for cooler, night games.

maroon dress

I also love this Flash Back dress. Dresses are by far my favorite game day outfits, simply because they’re effortless, yet still put together.

In addition to these and more maroon pieces, Sideline Sass has a wide array of clothing and accessories for many different styles and tastes. So if you’re an Aggie girl looking for gameday wear, or if you’re just looking for unique pieces to add to your closet, head over to Sideline Sass!

Spring 2014, Here I Come!

Hey Cats!

So I’m heading back to College Station today for the spring semester! I have mixed emotions about this. Obviously, I’m ready to get back to the place I love, but at the same time, this break has seemed incredibly short, and I wish I had a few more days to spend with my family. I actually hadn’t planned on going back this early, but I have a job interview Friday morning, which is exciting! Also one of my roommates will be back tomorrow as well, and the other on Friday (and our “fourth roommate”/bestie Ashley)! I can’t wait to see them and hear about their break.

Even though I feel like I didn’t get enough time at home, I still had a wonderful break. I got to hang out with my best friend Kinsey a lot, see my extended family, help my sister with wedding stuff, and had an all-around joyful holiday season. I just wish I had a few extra days to hang out and work on my afghan, but I do not. Luckily, I will be home in a few short weeks for my seastar’s wedding, so that will be nice!

I’m really looking forward to this semester, though. Spring semesters have such a different feel from fall. There’s no football, but somehow it seems just as (if not more) busy! I’m excited about my classes, especially my Health Communication class. Also, I’m getting my Aggie ring on April 11th and I literally cannot wait. I’m planning to join a few new organizations this semester, so that should keep me busy! Another goal is to find an internship for this summer, which is going to require a lot of work, but I’m ready! I’ll also be meeting with a few advisors to try and figure out what I’m going to do with my life because help me, I’m almost an adult. In addition to all these things, I’m looking forward to getting more involved with my church and making new friends in my classes and organizations. I can’t wait to see what God will teach me!

So even though I could stay a few more days, I’m ready to be back in a routine. Once I get everything packed (you should see this mess- I don’t even know where to begin) I’ll be singing my way back to Aggieland with my gurl Hilary Duff. Not a joke, I listen to her “Greatest Hits” album every time. She’s very inspirational, and I partially credit my high self-esteem in junior high (and now) to her.

I hope everyone has had a great holiday season, and all of you traveling back to school have a safe trip and a wonderful semester! I look forward to bloggin’ in 2014!

13 Things to Look Forward to in 2013

Hey Cats!

First of all, Happy New Year! I hope you had a great time celebrating with your friends and family! I didn’t do a lot, I just got dressed up and went to  dinner with a friend, and then we ended up back at my house watching the Kardashians in our yoga pants and eating queso. And it was really fine with me. As for New Year’s Resolutions, I don’t really do those. I like the concept of having “goals” better than “resolutions” because I feel like it’s more motivating. My goal for 2013 is to make a 4.0 at least one semester, or maybe both. So we’ll see how that works out. Anyways, as of right now 2013 has the potential to be a fantastic year. Lots of exciting things are on my calendar, and I can’t wait! Here are some of the things I’m already looking forward to:

1. Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl– This happens in three short days! I have been missing Aggie football, and I’m glad we have one more game before the fall. BTHO ou.

2. Spring semester starts in less than two weeks- Which means I get to go back to my friends in College Station in a little over a week! I’ve loved being home, but I’m ready to be back in my regular routine and use my planner and drink coffee every morning.

3. The Bachelor premieres January 7th- And I am dying. Sean was my absolute fave on the Bachelorette, because he loves Jesus and is a Texas boy, and I mean, have you SEEN him? omg. I think that if Emily had picked him she wouldn’t be single right now, but whatever. I cannot wait to watch it instead of doing my homework every week.

4. Pretty Little Liars comes back January 8th- And we all know how I feel about that. Obsessed.

5. Emerald Green as Color of the Year. This is just so great. I love jewel tones, and I love green. I will be on a year-long mission for all things this hue, just so you’re aware.

6. Kate Middleton is having the Royal Baby this year. I just love the Royal Family, especially Wills & Kate. Well, mostly just Kate. I mean, she is perfect and she earned the ultimate MRS degree, which is to be admired. I cannot wait for the next heir to the throne to come into the world, because I’m sure it will also be perfect.

7. The Great Gatsby premieres May 10th. I am literally beside myself about this one. It’s one of my favorite books of all time, and I am obsessed. The story of fabulous city life in the 20’s- perfect.  Also, Leonardo DiCaprio is absolutely perfect for the role of Jay Gatsby, especially since he’s put on a little weight since his Titanic days (but still, I’ll never let go, Jack!) Sometimes when I get bored I watch the trailer and freak out about this upcoming cinematic masterpiece. Going. To. Die.

8. I will be halfway done with college in May. Eeeeee! I don’t know how I feel about that, I kind of want to stay forever.

9. My cousin is getting married in July! She is the cousin I have been closest to my entire life, and was my first best friend. I am so excited for her! Also, it’s the first wedding I’m actually in, so I’m excited to be a bridesmaid!

10. I’m turning 21 in August! The last exciting birthday. After that, you’re just old.

11. Catching Fire premieres November 22. Katniss Everdeen is my hero and makes me want to learn to do outdoorsy things. I read the entire Hunger Games series this summer, and I loved it, and I’ve been dying for the next movie. Dying.

12. Britney is finally giving us new music. Okay, so this isn’t exactly confirmed (it’s not even rumored), but I can dream, right? I mean, 2012 was a great year for the Princess of Pop. I absolutely loved watching her be sassy on X-Factor, and I think we’re all more than ready for more Britney.

13. Another great year of life. While I’m excited about all of these things, I might be even more excited for the unexpected things that will come throughout the year. That’s what makes life interesting and wonderful, and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for me in 2013!

Meow until next time!
