Trends I’m Loving- One-Piece Swimsuits

Hey Cats!

One of my favorite parts of summer is getting a new swimsuit. I haven’t been able to find one I absolutely love this year, but I have my eye on a few. One style that I’m surprisingly drawn to this year is the one-piece. I’m usually not a huge fan, but lately one-piece swimsuits have started to look less like my church camp days and more like something I would voluntarily wear and not throw a fit about. Here’s a few options I’m loving right now:

swimsuit

This Kate Spade Saturday Cut-Out swimsuit in Strata Stripe is a great, updated one-piece. I love the cut-outs, and especially the open back. The pattern is also one of my favorites this summer- it’s so bright and fun!

jcrewswim

I also love this JCrew colorbock bandeau swimsuit. I like the simple shape, but the colorblock trim adds some interest- not to mention it’s very flattering!

piperlimeswim

This Clover Canyon Robot Flamingo suit from Piperlime could be my favorite! I love the bold print, and the high neckline and racerback are very unexpected.

What do you think about one-piece swimsuits this summer? Let me know!

Trends I’m Loving- Agate Anything

Hey Cats!

I have been noticing agate popping up in jewelry and home decor a lot lately. You might be wondering what agate is, as was I. According to Wikipedia (credible source, I know) agate is a “microcrystalline variety of silica, formed by siliceous deposits in volcanoes”. Basically, it’s a very pretty rock found in volcanoes that, when sliced, has bands of beautiful colors. I think it’s a good thing I took Horticulture instead of Geology. Anyways, it’s a gorgeous natural material that brings a lot of interest and unique flair to accessories for both your ensembles and your living space. Here are a few of my favorite agate items:

agate bangle

This agate bangle from Ellie’s Sparkles is a great way to wear the trend. I love the white and gray agate, it reminds me of sea shells- perfect for summer! This would be a great piece to anchor your stacked wrist.

agate necklace

I also love this Sliced Hot Pink Agate necklace from Etsy. It’s a simple pendant necklace, but the pop of hot pink would instantly spruce up any neutral outfit.

agate coasters

I’m dying to have these Agate Coasters from Kate Spade Saturday for my apartment. How cute would these be on a black or gold coffee table? (Not that I have either one of those…ours is powder blue, but we’re talking about the ideal decor situation.) This is a great, small way to incorporate the agate trend into your home.

agate bookends

These agate bookends from West Elm would add the perfect touch of interesting to your bookshelf. I personally like to have some odds and ends on my bookshelf, I feel like it makes it decorative in addition to functional. I love the creamy blue and white colors of these bookends- it’s a more earthy-looking take on the trend.

Also, fun fact, I just read the book in the middle of the picture, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman for my Health Communication class. Because you wanted to know. It was actually quite emotional, and presented the unique challenges that doctors and people of different cultures face in the American health care system. If you ever have some time on your hands, you should read it- it really challenged my perspectives on some things! But I digress.

How would you like to incorporate the agate trend into your wardrobe or home? Let me know in the comments!

Trends I’m Loving- Bold Florals

Hey Cats!

This season, bold, floral prints have been quite literally catching my eye. I spotted them months ago in my spring issue of InStyle, and the trend has definitely taken off, as I’ve already seen many different variations this spring. I love the vibrant colors paired with the huge patterns, especially when it gets a little edgy. This is a great way to make a statement, but also stay very feminine and classic. Here are a few of my favorites:

floral shorts

These cuffed shorts from New York and Company are a great way to try a casual take on the trend. Paired with a flowy top or a chambray, this would be a great option for lunch, or you could pair it with a bright-colored tank and wedges for going out.

floral dress1

Next, this Delightful Return fit & flare dress from ModCloth is probably my favorite way to execute a bold floral- on a dress with a feminine, classic silhouette. This would be perfect for many spring events, such as showers, graduation parties, or weddings. This would look perfect with a simple strand of pearls and nude pumps.

floral dress2

This Botanical Floral Shift dress from Forever21 is a more edgy take on the trend. This would look great with black booties and a topknot for a night on the town!

floral top

This sleeveless drapey top from JCrew is another great casual option. Pair it with dark or white skinny jeans or chino shorts for a great summertime lunch look!

I’m definitely looking for ways to add bold florals into my wardrobe this summer! What’s your favorite way to wear a floral print?

In My Closet- Colored Jeans

Hey Cats!

It’s my last week at work before I go back to school! I’m excited to get back to my friends and the place I love, but I’m a little sad to be leaving my job. It’s been lots of fun and I have learned so much! However, I am going to be excited to wear Norts and a tee instead of business casual every day. Anyways, today I have decided to share another “In My Closet” post. For new readers, this is a series in which I feature one item that I personally own that I feel is a staple in the wardrobe of a fashion-forward young woman. Today I chose colored jeans! These have really become popular in the last couple of years, and have become a personal favorite of mine.

photo (33)

I have the three pairs pictured above. The mustard and fuchsia pairs came from JcPenney last summer (so they might not have these colors anymore), and the cobalt pair came from a boutique in Tyler that is now closed (so sad!). However, colored jeans are everywhere! They have great options at JCPenney, JCrew, and Old Navy, just to name a few! I love my colored jeans, they are a great option when I want to wear something different, but still be comfortable. I typically pair mine with a neutral top, but occasionally I will be bold and try out different color combinations. I love the mustard pair for fall, and I like to pair them with a solid black long-sleeved tee, leopard flats and a statement necklace, or with my navy blazer and riding boots for a dressier look. I feel like I have a few more options with the fuchsia pair. I like to pair them with either a solid gray, white, or black tee and a statement necklace, a lace top, a navy blazer, and anything else I feel like matches! With the cobalt, I like to wear a gray solid tee, or a gray cardigan. Of course, the possibilities are endless! I also love that there are so many options of colored jeans, and everyone wears them different ways. Colored jeans have truly become a new staple in the modern closet.

What’s your favorite way to wear colored jeans?

Need It Now- My Current Obsessions

Hey Cats!

Recently, I’ve gained a new love for jewelry. In the past I found it difficult to find pieces that matched each outfit, but that was only because my collection was too small. So obviously I had to do something about that! Over the past year, my bauble stash has grown considerably (but not too much, I’m on a college girl budget) and I have enjoyed adding variety to my wardrobe with jewelry. I try not to get pieces that are too trendy so I can use them forever, but there are a few pieces that are so “right now” that I’m dying to try!

Above-The-Knuckle Rings

Image

I LOVE these. They’re so dainty and a little bit funky, and they remind me of Phoebe from friends. My friend Kinsey and I were shopping the other day and we found some and completely freaked out because we have been looking for them FOREVER. I didn’t get any, (I so should have) but she did and they’re so cutie! I think they look great with bright nails and a well-stacked wrist! I also love the look of having one on multiple fingers. The ones pictured above are from Children Of Flowers on Etsy. Etsy has a great selection with an excellent price range! I love the chevron, and I also love these simple bands from AlinMay, these with the gorgeous rhinestone detail from JackandHazelStore, and of course, these with the precious heart and triangle detail from Raw Earth Studio. There are so many more that I love, initials, crosses, and many other shapes! There’s something for everyone!

The Stacked Wrist

Image

This image from kate spade new york shows a few variations on the stacked wrist. I like the different materials and color combinations, I think it adds interest and personality to an outfit! I also love anchoring the look with a big watch, like this one from Michael Kors. Another great addition to the stacked wrist is a few of these beautiful beaded bracelets from Lily and Laura&lt. The best thing about a stacked wrist is that you can use what you have, and it never has to look the same!

Layered Necklaces

Image

I have one necklace that I typically wear every day, with a Texas A&M charm and my sorority letters, so I’m usually not into other necklaces, but the layered look is making me think again! I love the look of a few dainty chains of varying lengths with different charms or stones. I’m looking into buying a few to mix with a necklace I found in a vase of old jewelry from Goodwill I received at a white elephant party last Christmas. It has a small gold circle charm that says “LOVE” and it’s adorable. I plan on pairing it with a gold and turquoise cross necklace, like this one from addieladawn on Etsy, and an initial necklace, like this one from mctdesigns on Etsy.

All of these trends are definitely on my “to-buy” list for the summer! What are you loving right now?

Current Obsession- Friendship Bracelets

Hey Cats!

Recently I have developed a new appreciation for a childhood favorite: the friendship bracelet. The bright colors and fun patterns scream summer to me, and I think they’re the perfect addition to any casual summer ensemble! They are also fun to make, which I re-discovered during finals week. Very poor timing, I know. My roommate and I would take bracelet study breaks, which usually turned into dinner and Dance Moms breaks, which turned into a few hours. Oops! I also went overboard and bought a 36-skein variety pack of embroidery thread because I thought I would use it all over the summer, so I’m hoping that this phase lasts a while.

image (16)

Here are all of the bracelets I’ve made so far! The one on the left is my favorite, and since it’s a little more dressy, I usually wear it in a group with my kate spade bangle and a few others for a stacked wrist! I made it myself, following this tutorial. The next bracelet is a simple chevron, which I have known how to make forever, but if you don’t, you can follow this tutorial. The big, fancy one is one of my favorites. It took me forever, and unfortunately it’s too big for my wrist, but I’m working on finding a solution to that! You can make it following this tutorial. Finally, we have the blue and green bracelet. I like this one because it doesn’t look like the rest of them! I followed this tutorial.

Here is my mass of embroidery thread. Anybody want a bracelet?

Here’s the bracelet I’m working on right now!

Hopefully you will make a few bracelets and add them to your summer wardrobe! I like to mix them in with other jewelry to add a pop of color and fun! What do you think about this trend? Let me know!

Summer Style Watch

Hey Cats!

First of all, how do you like the new blog? It’s very chic and sleek, which is what I was wanting for the blog, so I love it!

Also, since I’m home for the summer, I have plenty of time to craft, cook, and blog! I have so many crafts I plan on making for my new house next year, and I’m excited to share them with you. If I end up actually doing them.

But for now, I’m going to share my picks for my favorite fashion trends this summer! Summer has always been my favorite season: swimming, sunshine, no school, and the freedom to dress however you want. Now that I’m in college, I can wear whatever I want all the time, but before I couldn’t wait to be free from school dress code and wear shorts and tank tops all the time! I’ve noticed that my style becomes more relaxed and bohemian during the summer. Normally, I steer clear of anything that could be deemed “bohemian” due to my mostly preppy and classic wardrobe, but there’s something about the natural, messy style that I can’t stay away from while frolicking in the sun from May-August. It’s also fun to mix more relaxed pieces with structured pieces to create a unique look. But more on that later!

The first thing I’m loving this summer is mix-and-match swimsuits. I am fully aware that this trend has been around for a while, but I have just now hopped on the train! I decided to go for solid colors, that way I can wear them together and mix them with the patterned pieces I already have. The possibilities are endless! I bought these two at JCPenney’s the other day- each piece was just $5! Also, JCP has turned into a new favorite store- everything is so cute now, and very affordable!

image (6) photo (3)

Next on my list is the maxi dress. I love maxi dresses- they can be dressed up or down, and are perfect for when you don’t feel like wearing anything too constricting. I feel like you can put on a maxi dress and say, “Well I really don’t care what I’m wearing but I’m still looking fabulous.” I’ve had my two favorites forever, but they’re both so versatile! I have a solid black dress that I like to wear with colorful sandals, statement earrings, and an armful of gold bangles. The printed dress I wear with wedges and my cropped denim jacket.

image (7)

I’m also on the hunt for a maxi skirt that I can pair with tanks and my denim jacket for a different look! I tried wearing the printed dress as a skirt to church a couple of weeks ago. It was really cute, but it was quite the struggle to walk and do other regular, necessary activities, so I won’t be doing that again. Also, my denim jacket that I mentioned has become a new favorite in my wardrobe. Living in East Texas/College Station, sometimes it’s okay to be a little bit country. I like to pair this with sundresses and boots when I go dancing, or over maxi dresses for church, or with other outfits when it might get a little chilly at night! I like mine because it’s cropped, so it’s not too bulky, and it has a cute design on the back that adds a little interest!

Another thing I’m loving this summer is eyelet everything. Shorts, dresses, tops, you name it! I love the feminine look, and it’s the perfect summer fabric! My favorite is white, just because it’s crisp and classic, but it’s good to have colorful options, too! I love this eyelet tie-front tank from Dillard’s. It would pair well with colorful shorts, or a pair of dark wash cropped jeans and wedges!

eyelet top

Every summer, I have to get a new pair of sunglasses. It seems there’s always a new shape that’s in, and I like to try them out! Also, I tend to lose or break sunglasses more than the average person. This year, I’m loving oversized circle frames. Ever since I spotted Kourtney Kardashian wearing these fab Prada frames on Kourtney & Kim Take Miami, I have been dying for them. Unfortunately, Prada is not within my college girl budget, so I’ll have to settle for the Target brand that’s not as fancy, but still the look I’m going for!

pradasunglasses

There are so many more trends I’m wanting to try for summer, but there isn’t enough time, and this post would be obnoxiously long! What are your favorite summer styles? I would love to hear from you!

Coming soon: crafts for all of those t-shirts you don’t wear anymore! Gather them up and get ready to give them a new job besides taking up space in your closet! Until next time!

Half-Moon Nails- An Experiment

Hey Cats!
Besides diy’s, one of my other new hobbies is trying new trends on my nails. Now, I’ve never been very good at painting my nails, so I usually don’t try things that seem complicated, but the other day I found some videos on Shine (Yahoo) that were very good and seemed easy enough, even for me! So, I gave the half-moon nails a try, because I’ve been seeing them in magazines and I love how they look! Instead of trying to teach you myself, I’ll just direct you to the video that I used!

Since I tried this, I guess I should show you how it turned out. Please keep in mind that I’m not a manicurist for a very good reason 🙂

I used Ulta’s Casual Mauve for the bottom layer, OPI’s You Don’t Know Jaques! for the top layer, and my sister’s Orly top coat. (thanks Katie!)
In the video, she tells you to put the stickers on after you paint each nail, but I would suggest applying all the stickers before you paint the top color. Also, make sure that your nails are very dry before applying the stickers and the second color, and before you peel the stickers off, because I peeled a little of the mauve paint off one of my nails. If you notice a little of the adhesive has been left behind by the stickers, don’t worry about it, the top coat will cover it up!

So, here’s how it turned out! Not perfect, but it’s still cute! I tried using a matte top coat instead of the regular, but I wasn’t crazy about it so I used the shiny. But I might try it next time, and you should too!
Oh, I know I said I had another project to show you, but I’m having a few problems with it, so it might be a few days… and since I’m making two (one for my sister), I would like to finish them both to make sure the instructions are clear! But I can’t wait to share it with you! Until next time!
