Roasted.

Hey Cats!

Happy Weekend! I’m off of work today, it’s payday (I think), and I get to see my sea-star tomorrow- it’s a great day.

I’ve never been very big on vegetables. As a child, I was forced to stay at the dinner table long after the rest of my family to finish an appropriate amount of peas or green beans- quite the dramatic scene I can assure you. When I went to college and started cooking for myself, I would microwave a small bowl of frozen green peas or frozen corn with every meal, so I could tell my mom that I was eating vegetables. However, I’ve recently discovered a new way to prepare vegetables that’s quite delicious- roasting them!

I’ve done this with brussels sprouts (my personal favorite), asparagus, and corn. Here’s my recipe for each:

Brussels Sprouts:

1. Halve or quarter brussels sprouts, depending on the size, and place on a baking sheet.

2. Drizzle with 1 tbsp olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper. Stir to coat.

3. Roast in a 400 degree oven for 15 minutes, turning every 5 minutes.

Asparagus:

1. Wash asparagus and trim off the ends. Line the stalks up on a baking sheet.

2. Drizzle with 1 tbsp olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper. Toss to coat.

3. Roast in a 400 degree oven for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through.

Corn:

1. Spread frozen corn evenly on a baking sheet.

2. Drizzle with 1 tbsp olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper. Stir to coat.

3. Broil at 500 degrees for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Keep an eye on this- I set the smoke alarm off in my house the first time I made it!

I love roasting vegetables because it’s a delicious flavor and it’s SO easy. I’ll usually stick both the veggies and whatever chicken I’m also cooking in the oven at the same time, and it’s a real time-saver. Lately, I’ve been throwing a handful of cherry tomatoes on the pan as well and letting the skin break and roast- so good. If you’re looking for a quick way to prepare your vegetables, or if you’re not the biggest herbivore like myself, you should definitely try roasted veggies. Your mother will be so pleased that you’ve finally learned to eat your greens- at least mine is!

That’s all for meow!

In My Closet- The Everyday Handbag

Hey Cats!

Happy Thursday! It’s been a short week- yay! I’m definitely looking forward to the weekend, and I get to see my family on Sunday, so that’s exciting!

“In My Closet”  is a series where I feature a piece that I personally own that I believe is a staple in the wardrobe of a fashion-forward young woman. Today, we’re talking purses. I used to be a huge purse girl, but since I’ve been in college that’s changed- I’ve been carrying the same one since my freshman year!  I have an extensive collection of handbags at my parents’ house, from my Dooney & Bourke I got when I turned thirteen (my first “It Bag”), to the Juicy Couture monstrosity I saved months of babysitting money to buy, to the various other colorful totes I carried in high school. However these days I tend to carry the same bag every single day, unless I’m feeling crazy or going out or to a football game, or anywhere where it would be too fussy to carry a large handbag.

longchamp

I bought this Longchamp Small Le Pliage bag in Slate with my graduation money after I graduated from high school, and I’ve carried it ever since. It was (and still kind of is) a “college girl” bag, and I was so excited about it. I love the classic shape and color; although it was a big trend at the time, it’s actually quite a timeless addition to my closet. Another thing I love about this bag is that it’s incredibly durable. I’ve carried this bag across campus through the rain, filled it to the brim, dropped it in the grass, and (gasp) set it on the ground countless times. It’s never ripped, and aside from a few stains on the bottom and a little wear on the straps, it still looks pretty good. Also, I can fit literally everything I need inside. I always have a small first aid kit, my wallet, a small notepad, and tons of other crap really important things like receipts and grocery lists. In fact, just last week I shoved an umbrella and a pair of heels inside for my ‘commute’ to work. It’s like my mom bag, except I’m definitely not a mom. It’s my single-girl bag. Honestly, I’ll probably be carrying this until it falls apart. It’s definitely no small purchase, but Lois Longchamp (yes, I named her) has been with me for three years now, and it doesn’t look like she’s giving up anytime soon. Every girl needs a dependable everyday handbag in her closet- I would definitely suggest a Longchamp, but if that’s not your style, just be sure it’s a neutral that blends well with anything, is durable, and is a bottomless pit for all your everyday necessities.

Trends I’m Loving-D’Orsay Flats

Hey Cats!

This week is a short one- whoop! It was nice to have an extra day to relax and get some chores done, even if it did rain all day.

I typically prefer sandals over close-toed shoes during the spring and summer, but a particular style of flats has caught my eye lately, and I’m considering adding a pair to my shoe family because they’re just so cute! With their pointed toe and two-piece style, D’Orsay flats are a fresh take on a classic, and I’m loving all the different options!

general flats kate spade

These kate spade General flats are perfect for the office, or just for everyday with a pair of dark skinnies. I love the classic combination of nude and black, and the bow adds the perfect feminine touch.

charles david flats

I love the pop of orange that these Charles by Charles David Bermuda flats bring to the table. It pairs nicely with the nude, and I also like the slight wedge- that way your feet aren’t killing you because of too flat soles! This would be great with black cigarette pants for the office, or a cute cuffed pair of boyfriend jeans for everyday.

modcloth flats

I love the whimsical color and print of these Dreaming of Destinations flats from Modcloth.  They’re a great, fun option, and would be cute paired with white skinny jeans and a chambray for an effortless everyday look.

How do you feel about D’Orsay flats? Let me know!

Today, I’m linking up with Zelle from A Southern Style, Kristina from Medicine & Manicures, Katie from Champagne & Suitcases, and Amanda from As the Wine Cork Turns for #TrendingTuesday- head over and see what’s trendy this Tuesday!

Office Chic

Hey Cats!

Happy Memorial Day! I hope everyone is enjoying their day off- I know I am! I plan on relaxing and running errands today, and I may squeeze in a trip to the pool if it’s not cloudy!

One of my favorite parts of working in an office environment is wearing business casual. I know that sounds silly, but it makes me feel put-together and professional, and it’s very different from the Nike shorts and leggings I wear to class. Thanks to my internship last summer, I already have a quite versatile office-appropriate wardrobe, but it’s always nice to expand! I went shopping Thursday, sort of looking for something new to wear to work, but mostly looking for something to do with my time. I wandered into Old Navy and found these Tuxedo Stripe Pixie Pants on clearance for $9! I tried them on and LOVED them. They’re a little trendy and edgy, but still office appropriate.

I wore these to work on Friday with my white flowy top from Loft (no longer available, but I love this one!). I decided to go with a simple, clean color scheme, and I half-tucked my top to give it a bit more of a put-together look. I added my nude Steve Madden pumps and Kendra Scott Morgan studs. I love the stripe down the leg, it adds a bit of interest to the classic black dress pant. Also, the nude pumps keep the ensemble classic, chic, and streamlined. This may be my new favorite outfit to wear to the office- it’s an updated version of business casual that’s just the right mix of professional and contemporary chic. I’m excited to see the many ways these pants will work in my wardrobe- both work and play!

On The Hunt: The Perfect Tote Bag

Hey Cats!

I’ve decided to skip Friday’s Five this week, partly because I didn’t do anything super interesting, and partly because I feel like the blog needs some variety. I’ve been doing a lot of link lists lately, and I feel like my content needs to be a bit more creative! Wish me luck!

I found out the hard way (through a parking ticket) that transportation services does indeed patrol the parking lot by my office, and unfortunately it’s too late for me switch out my parking pass. So I have to park in my usual lot and walk to the bus, which takes me to my building. It’s not ideal, but it’s just like walking to class so it’s nothing I’m not used to, and it will be good exercise! This means that if I want to wear heels to the office, like I’m planning on doing today, I’ll have to wear flats and change on the bus. I also carry my lunch, water bottle, and purse, which is quite a handful. So now I’m on the hunt for a cute tote bag to throw everything in!  Here are a few options I’m considering:

jon hart

I’ve always, always loved Jon Hart totes- they’re classic, durable, and personalized. I’m thinking about the Petite Left Bank in Black, Red, Burgundy, or Navy.

vera

I’m also considering Vera Bradley’s Vera tote in Venetian Paisley, one of my newest favorite prints. I love this one because it’s roomy, washable, and fun!

barrington

This Barrington St. Anne tote combines what I love about the Jon Hart and Vera Bradley options- durable and personalized with a fun pattern. They also have Game Day totes in Aggie Maroon- bonus!

marley lilly tote

Marley Lilly’s Essential Tote is also a high contender. I love the monogram, obviously, and it’s very affordable! I’m thinking about a black bag with a gold circle block monogram.

There’s just so many options that I can’t decide! Which one would you pick and why? Let me know!

In My Closet- Neutral Heel Collection

Hey Cats!

It’s almost the weekend! I forgot how exciting the weekend is when you’re working- I’m loving my job, but it will be nice to have a break and maybe get some of that laundry done that’s piling up. It’s also Memorial Day weekend, so we get an extra day! Had I not just returned to College Station, I would go home to be with my family, but I’m just planning on staying here and relaxing (and probably watching Bravo until I become Heather Thomson- HOLLA). And blogging, of course.

“In My Closet”  is a series where I feature a piece (or four, in this case) that I personally own that I believe is a staple in the wardrobe of a fashion-forward young woman. Today, I’m highlighting my staple heels- black and nude, each in two different styles.

photo (74)

Now, this lineup of shoes might seem a bit excessive to some, and you know what? Maybe it is. But don’t you worry, I can definitely justify having two pairs of shoes in the same color. A large shoe family is a happy shoe family. Let’s start with the black heels.

image (71)

First are these Jessica Simpson platform pumps. I’ve had these ever since my sophomore year of college, and I absolutely love them. They’re a classic style, but also very tall and sassy (yet surprisingly easy to walk in). The rounded toe makes them an obvious choice for winter, and sometimes I feel that the matte leather simply looks better than the patent- but it depends on what I’m wearing, and what kind of mood I’m in. Also, they are the only heels I have that are tall enough to wear with a certain pair of dress pants, so sometimes I choose these out of necessity- I wouldn’t want to be tripping on my own pants!

image (70)

Next are these Jessica Simpson patent peep-toe heels. I got these for my cousin’s wedding, because she wanted us to have patent heels, and everyone else had peep-toe, so I obviously couldn’t be the odd bridesmaid out! I felt bad asking my mom for another pair of black heels, so I suggested we get a pair from Payless or Target, and she responded, “I don’t buy cheap shoes.” So that’s worked out well for me! I like the shorter height of these heels, they’re a more casual option, and more practical for everyday wear. If I wear heels to work (rare), I’ll wear these (or their nude twins), and my feet aren’t dying by the end of the day. As with the platform pumps, there are certain ensembles I feel simply look better with these shoes than the others- it just depends, and it’s always nice to have options!

image (69)

These Steve Madden pointed-toe pumps are basically my first true love. I searched for nude pumps that complimented my skin tone for YEARS before I came across these- I had finally found my sole mate. I love the matte leather and the pointed toe, it’s a very chic and timeless style. I usually wear these with more tailored, formal dresses, or black dress pants. They’re the Audrey Hepburn of my shoe family, and I will cherish them forever.

image (68)

Yes, these are the same Jessica Simpson pumps I have in black. I had them in pewter once, but I would wear them from my dorm to the parking garage my freshman year and destroyed the soles, so they’re no more. But there’s a reason I’ve had three pairs of these- they’re a great shoe, and a staple in my wardrobe. I bought these shoes for my sister’s wedding (weddings have done great things for my shoe family…I need to be in another one soon…), as we were wearing nude heels, and pointed-toe pumps would not have looked good with a floor-length gown. Again, I love these because they’re more casual, and I typically wear them with flowy sundresses, or when I’m going to be standing a long time. Another perk to having the same shoe in two different colors- I can wear either one with my suit- black for winter and fall, nude for spring and summer!

It’s definitely nice to have so many options, but it’s not completely necessary. I would suggest at least one pair of black heels and one pair of nude heels, each in basic, not too trendy styles. One of the two will match everything, and if you get a good pair, they’ll last forever! Classic heels are a great way to add instant polish to any ensemble, and are a staple for your single girl closet.

Wednesday Pins-Day

Hey Cats!

Happy Wednesday! Today’s my first real day at work, and I’m so excited! Yesterday I had training, and it was a long day of videos and quizzes, and I walked out to a parking ticket on my car. Wonderful. But today will be better I’m sure! I’m excited to finally get started on my actual internship and see what I’ll be doing for the summer and the school year!

I skipped Wednesday Pins-Day last week, because I hadn’t really been pinning a lot, but this week I have some great things to share!

srirachagrilledcheese

First is this recipe for the ultimate sandwich, a toad-in-a-hole sriracha grilled cheese. Yes, you read that correctly. I almost died of happiness when I came across this pin, because it’s a combination of three of my favorite foods- eggs, sriracha, and cheese. I made this for lunch last week and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I used regular sandwich bread instead of sourdough out of convenience, but it was still more than I could have hoped for. Make this- it’s a glimpse of what I imagine heaven to be like.

austin

Next is this travel guide to Austin from my friends at kate spade new york. I have this new obsession with Austin- despite the fact that “that other school” is located there, it’s a very unique city I’d like to explore more. Hopefully that will be a weekend trip this summer! Also, I’m thinking about attending ACL this year, so this would definitely come in handy!

monogram stamp

This monogrammed stamp from Neiman Marcus would be the perfect southern touch to your stationery collection. I would love to have one for myself, and it would also make a great gift for a bride-to-be, or anyone! You can never go wrong with a monogram.

bag

This Gold Lock Crossbody Bag in Hyper Pink from Kate Spade Saturday is the perfect summer purse. It’s bright color adds a pop to any outfit, and it’s a crossbody, so you won’t have to fuss with it too much!

georgie

Per usual, a baby royal for the road. I’m still loving these sassy photos of Georgie doing his thing as heir to England.

Trends I’m Loving- Agate Anything

Hey Cats!

I have been noticing agate popping up in jewelry and home decor a lot lately. You might be wondering what agate is, as was I. According to Wikipedia (credible source, I know) agate is a “microcrystalline variety of silica, formed by siliceous deposits in volcanoes”. Basically, it’s a very pretty rock found in volcanoes that, when sliced, has bands of beautiful colors. I think it’s a good thing I took Horticulture instead of Geology. Anyways, it’s a gorgeous natural material that brings a lot of interest and unique flair to accessories for both your ensembles and your living space. Here are a few of my favorite agate items:

agate bangle

This agate bangle from Ellie’s Sparkles is a great way to wear the trend. I love the white and gray agate, it reminds me of sea shells- perfect for summer! This would be a great piece to anchor your stacked wrist.

agate necklace

I also love this Sliced Hot Pink Agate necklace from Etsy. It’s a simple pendant necklace, but the pop of hot pink would instantly spruce up any neutral outfit.

agate coasters

I’m dying to have these Agate Coasters from Kate Spade Saturday for my apartment. How cute would these be on a black or gold coffee table? (Not that I have either one of those…ours is powder blue, but we’re talking about the ideal decor situation.) This is a great, small way to incorporate the agate trend into your home.

agate bookends

These agate bookends from West Elm would add the perfect touch of interesting to your bookshelf. I personally like to have some odds and ends on my bookshelf, I feel like it makes it decorative in addition to functional. I love the creamy blue and white colors of these bookends- it’s a more earthy-looking take on the trend.

Also, fun fact, I just read the book in the middle of the picture, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman for my Health Communication class. Because you wanted to know. It was actually quite emotional, and presented the unique challenges that doctors and people of different cultures face in the American health care system. If you ever have some time on your hands, you should read it- it really challenged my perspectives on some things! But I digress.

How would you like to incorporate the agate trend into your wardrobe or home? Let me know in the comments!

Monday’s Musings

Hey Cats!

I’m headed back to College Station today- WHOOP! I’m actually really sad to be leaving my family, but I’m really excited about my internship, which starts tomorrow- yay! I’ll also be glad to get back to my apartment, my roommates, and life as an independent woman. I’ve always gone home for the summer, so staying should definitely be an adventure. This week, as I start my internship, I’m a little bit nervous. However, I recently came across this quote, and it’s been very encouraging:

quote2

I’ve been going back and forth between wanting to go to law school and wanting to pursue a career in marketing and public relations after graduation for about the past year, and the answer doesn’t seem to be getting any clearer. On one hand, I’m scared to go to law school because I’m afraid I’ll end up not liking it as much as I thought, and on the other hand I’m afraid that if I don’t, I’ll always wish that I did. So you see my dilemma. Although both of those options terrify me, they both seem amazing in different ways. So when looking for an internship, I decided to apply for any and all that would be beneficial to either a career as an attorney, or a career in public relations and whatever happened, happened. But, within three days I was offered a position in both fields- my internship from the law firm I worked at last summer, and an internship in the public relations field in College Station. Needless to say, I didn’t know what to do- I never thought I’d get one of each! Ultimately, I chose the internship in College Station, because it continues through the school year, and it’s an opportunity for me to explore a different career path that I’m interested in. I’m kind of afraid that after this summer, I’ll love public relations and will no longer want to go to law school- something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. But I’m more afraid that if I pass up this opportunity, I’ll regret it. Even though it scares me, it’s an awesome opportunity, so I’m going to go for it. And even if I do end up going to law school, any experience in a professional environment is very valuable!  Wish me luck as I start tomorrow, and get ready for many Work Wardrobe posts!

Friday’s Five

Hey Cats!

I can’t believe it’s already Friday! I’ve had a great week at home, and I’m a little sad it’s coming to an end. I’m excited for my internship, but I also love spending time with my family! But you can’t have it both ways, so Monday it’s back to Aggieland I go! My parents have been at work during the day, so I’ve been on my own a lot this week, running errands and lunching, but mostly lounging- not sorry. Here’s what I’ve been loving this week:

1.

10 things before buying

First is this article from Yahoo! that gives 10 questions to ask yourself before buying anything expensive. As someone who is a bit of an impulse shopper, these questions make the “it’s an investment” excuse seem null and void. So before you swipe your card, take home that fabulous handbag, and then realize you can’t eat out for the next two months, go through this list- you’ll thank me.

2.

photo (73)

I got to see my little blonde bestie on Wednesday! She goes to school allll the way across Texas, so we rarely get to see each other. Also, we’re both staying in our college towns this summer, so Tuesday was probably the only day we’ll be in our hometown at the same time…tragic. But we’re planning to visit each other, so that will be good! We went last-minute shopping for her trip to Europe (she left Thursday- tell Kate Middleton I said hello!) and caught up. Definitely a highlight of my trip home, as usual! Also, we’re both wearing Kendra, duh. Kinsey’s wearing the Danielle Earrings in Rose Quartz, available on the Color Bar, and I’m wearing my Elle Earrings in Turquoise.

3.

image (67)

Next is this little impulse purchase. I’ve been dying for this candle for years, ever since the people I babysat for in high school had them all over their house. I guess this means I’m an adult- choosing to buy a candle instead of nail polish.  It’s a Tyler Candle, made in my hometown, and the scent is Limelight. It’s such a fresh, sassy scent, and I can’t wait to use it in my room at school! They can be found at gift shops across Texas, and online. I’m obsessed.

4.

watermelon flats

These kate spade new york Jade Watermelon Flats bring back memories of a watermelon swim suit I had as a small child, and I’m loving it. How cute would these be for summer? Kate, you’ve done it again.

5. Last is the story about the cat that saved a little boy from a dog attack. I saw this on the news on Wednesday, and was quite surprised, since cats are usually pretty uninterested in anything other than themselves.  I’m sure you’ve seen this on the news as well, but if not, you can watch the video here. Just another reason to love kitties! I also love how the little boy said that the cat was his hero- so sweet!

So there you have it- another week! I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Today I’m linking up with Darci, April, Christina, and Natasha!
